When arriving to the Vineyard by way of Steamship Authority that has landed in Vineyard Haven: You will need to get on the Vineyard Transit Authority and take the bus to Oak Bluffs and get off at the Ocean Park stop. We would recommend - There was a total of 13 people in the van. It was a nice, small group. The driver/tour guide was nice and gave us a lot of history. The van was comfortable. The highlight was when we got out and took a short walk to see the Gay Head cliffs. The view was spectacular everywhere you looked.

Wasn't entirely bad...... - This review is a little delayed. We used this service on 7/14/26. I've been a little under the weather since I returned back from vacation. I'm just now getting myself together, and I wanted to leave my review of Viator. The only reason I gave 3 stars is because of how knowledgeable Stan the man was. He made the excursion salvageable. I was notified at 5am via text the day of our excursion that we were moved up from 1pm to 11am. I was told they sent me an email the day before, but I never received it!!! The day before is still unacceptable as we had already had our tickets for the ferry in place, as many purchase their tickets in advance as advised to do so. Thank goodness we had 9am tickets. When the bus arrived, the air conditioner wasn't working properly and we were told nothing could be done about it, so we had minimal air. Thank goodness we didn't have an extremely hot day or we would have been in big trouble. The mic that Stan had on his bus worked at minimal as well, but Stan did make the best of it. All in all I would say this bus should be retired. But the excursion itself of the island was enjoyable and knowledgeable. We learned a lot of history about the island. Viator just needs to make sure their equipment is working properly and their communication skills improve, and they would get 5 stars instead of 3. I hope my review helps someone's decision.

Strange day with a frustrating outcome - Strange experience on my tour day with Homegrown. I had booked the 10:30am tour, but when I arrived there was no bus or driver. Left a text and voicemail and was called back by Deedee who let me know that the morning tour was canceled and asked if I could join the 1pm tour instead. Thankfully my plans were flexible, but would have appreciated a call or email letting me know - I checked my spam folder and TripAdvisor accounts after and had not received any notification. I arrived again before 1pm and checked in with David, the guide and driver. David was fantastic, energetic, and seemed to really enjoy giving these tours and sharing his love for MV. Unfortunately, the bus had mechanical issues and had broken down before the tour even began. No big deal, these things happen and no one could have predicted it. David filled the time with stories and a brief history of Oak Bluffs, which was appreciated while we waited for information on next steps. The group got a call from Deedee who let us know she could put us on a different tour company’s 2pm tour, and that this alternative was the same length (3 hours) and had the same stops as her tour (4 stops around the island). I purposely booked Homegrown for the added stops, so was happy to hear we were getting a comparable tour. This unfortunately was not the case. After arriving back to the new tour’s pickup location at 2pm, we met the new guide/driver. I won’t review much of the tour I ended up taking since I was now with a separate company, I’ll just say that I wish we still had David instead of the driver we ended up with, who did not seem to be nearly as enthusiastic or informed about the island. We left around 2:10, and almost got to Vineyard Haven before having to turn around to pick up 3 guests who had been left behind. This cut into the 3 hours - and those guests missed out on the Oak Bluffs portion of the tour. Lastly, we only ended up stopping at Menemsha and the Aquinnah Cliffs - only 2 stops instead of the 4 we were promised. My biggest issue with the experience was not the delays, or canceled morning tour, or the driver. It was that we were promised the new tour we were put on was comparable to our original Homegrown tour - It was not. I looked up the price of the tour we ended up taking and it was $55, which is $20 less than the original $75 tour I booked with Homegrown. I was not contacted about a partial refund for the inconveniences or disproportionate tour experience. I understand that things happen that can’t be anticipated, like a broken bus, and I understand that the tour and guide I ended up with were not employed directly Homegrown Tours - but it was frustrating to be promised we were being transferred to a comparable experience for the money we paid and to then not receive that.

Jaws tour only on Saturday’s - My fave stops were the Aquinnah lighthouse and the morning glory farm. Our driver has been coming to the vineyard to stay with his grandma for 50 years, he said he is lucky that his grandma bout a property decades ago as the home his grandma bought then is now worth $2m. I also loved the story he shared of how this island is one of the few places where black people can own a property and freely vacation back then but disheartening to hear about segregation when it came to beach use. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Black-life-on-Marthas-Vineyard This tour was kind of a cluster as neither the confirmation or listing specifically stated where the meeting spot was going to be , we had to ask around. Luckily being a tourist town, locals know these sort of stuff. Internet / cell service was not great on the island so I was having a hard time getting ahold of tour operator. Also I booked the jaws tour but the driver mentioned, the jaws tour is only on a Saturday wth , we took the tour on a Thursday. He still shared a few jaws sites and tidbits anyways.

This tour was not the... - This tour was not the full 2 and a half hours that it was supposed to be. We had people that came late and only had 20 minutes at our stop to see the bluffs. That was disappointing and he drove to fast that you couldn't get good pictures.

Stay away from HomeGrown tours - Don’t go with these people. We arrived and their rough, old looking bus had broken down. Their representative apologised and said there was a replacement bus coming in an hour. We waited an hour and 20 minutes and the replacement never came. The company rep was nowhere to be seen, and after contacting them again were basically told sorry bad luck we’ll refund your money. They have since made up some nonsense story and refused a refund. Ruined our day trip to Martha’s vineyard. Give this operator a miss and find someone else.

Homegrown Problem - Homegrown Tours was recommended to my wife and I by another couple that had taken this tour the day before. They told us that tour was very interesting and one of the operators topics was about the plight of African Americans on Martha's Vineyard. We booked the tour because that topic peaked our interest. Well, Homegrown Tours cancelled our reservation at 9:30 am for a 10:30 am tour. The reason for cancellation was "a family emergency". (just read the other reviews) They did however refer us to another near by tour bus company. Since we had already paid for the tour, we jumped on the other MV Tour bus. The operator did not mention "African American or Blacks" one time over a three hour tour. He even stopped the bus right across the street from "The Inkwell Beach" and never mentioned the beach. He only spoke about the grass park across the street. Just disappointing !
