Manoa Falls Trail is a favorite among tourists as it leads through the jungle to a stunning waterfall, which means it tends to be quite busy. In contrast, the Kalawahine Trail offers a more serene experience.
The Manoa Falls Trail stretches about 1 mile each way and is located in the rain-prone Manoa Valley, so expect some rain during the hike. Recent improvements have added more gravel, reducing the mud compared to before. Although the waterfall’s flow can sometimes be underwhelming, the jungle trek is still rewarding.
Please inform us of your trail preference, Manoa Falls Trail or Kalawahine Trail, so we can secure the necessary permits in advance.
- Kalawahine Trail - The Kalawahine Trail is another option among the two trails offered. With a permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, hikes are available on seven trails. The Kalawahine Trail is an easy path with gentle inclines. Starting at about 1500 feet up the mountain, the trail is accessible by car and leads directly into the forest. It features a dirt walking path.
In season, the trail offers pink guava and strawberry guava, a variety of plants, and views of the Leeward side of the island towards Pearl Harbor. Along the way, layers of cinders reveal the eruption of a crater above the trail. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting the White-rumped Shama among other birds. This peaceful trail is less crowded and drier than the Manoa Falls Trail. It spans 1.5 miles each way, with the option to turn back at any point. Kalawahine, meaning Day of the Woman, is a personal favorite.

Select one of two hiking options: a journey through the valley to a waterfall or a trek from the mountain top with breathtaking views. This is an exclusive, guided tour along a trail in Hawaii’s Mountain Jungle. We hold an official permit from the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, allowing us to conduct hikes on 7 out of their 34 trails. We offer tours on two specific trails: the Manoa Falls Trail and the Kalawahine Trail. The Manoa Falls Trail is a 1-mile path in a valley, known to be somewhat busy. In contrast, the Kalawahine Trail spans 1.5 miles at an elevation of approximately 1000 feet, offering tranquility and beautiful vistas. The permit permits hikes from Monday to Friday only. Please inform us of your trail preference so we can secure the permit. A guide will accompany you, pointing out the local birds, flowers, trees, fruits, and plants, while sharing insights into the area’s history and culture. Both trails are easy to walk. The Kalawahine Trail begins at around 1000 feet, but remains mostly flat and accessible. Manoa Falls is situated in a valley renowned for its rainfall.
