Leonard worked at Snowflake Bakery until founding Leonard’s Bakery℠ in 1952.
Leonard and Margaret, both from large families, were no strangers to hard work. The bakery thrived. Shortly after opening, Leonard’s mother suggested making malasadas for Shrove Tuesday, a Portuguese tradition. Although initially hesitant, Leonard’s bakers complied, and malasadas became a huge hit, sparking a craving for them in Hawaii.

Kamehameha was a respected warrior and leader, uniting Hawaii into one royal kingdom in 1810 after years of conflict. He encouraged foreign trade and technology while avoiding foreign rule. The 18-foot bronze statue depicts him extending his hand in a welcoming gesture of aloha.
King Kamehameha commissioned Ali’iolani Hale to be the royal palace of the Hawaiian Monarchy. Built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, its name means ‘House of the Heavenly King’.
