Horton Plains National Park is situated 32 km from Nuwara Eliya, accessible via Pattipola road through Ambewela, in Sri Lanka’s highest tableland. The drive will take us to the starting point of Horton Plains National Park. From there, the hike will begin across a stunning plateau adorned with montane evergreen forests, cloud forests, grasslands, marshy lands, and aquatic ecosystems. Horton Plains serves as a crucial catchment area, acting like a giant sponge to store rainwater. Throughout the journey, a wide variety of rare and endemic flora and fauna can be observed. The escarpment ‘Maha Lokanthaya’ (Big World’s End) and the dazzling Baker’s Falls are remarkable wonders that enhance the plains’ allure. The blooming of Nelu flowers, which occurs once every 12 years in vibrant colors, is an unforgettable sight. After completing the 9 km hiking trek, the return journey to Nuwara Eliya will commence.

Our drive will take us to the entrance of this expansive park. Once there, we will embark on a hike amid the exquisite spectacles of evergreen Montane forests, Cloud forests, Grass lands, Marshy Lands and Aquatic eco-systems that the plateau boasts. Recognised as a key catchment area, Horton Plains acts as a colossal reservoir that stores rainwater. Along this adventure, you’ll encounter an array of rare and endemic plant and animal species. The ‘Maha Lokanthaya’ escarpment (Big Worlds End) and the shimmering Baker’s falls amplify the allure of these plains. Viewing the blooming Nelu flowers is a rare marvel, their stunning variety of hues appearing once every 12 years - a truly indelible memory. After a 9 km trek, we will drive back to Nuwaraeliya.
