• Horton Plains (forest) - Situated in Sri Lanka, Horton Plains is the most frigid and blustery spot in the nation, blanketed with expansive wild grasslands, interspersed with dense forest sections, rugged stone formations, delicate cascades, and fog-laden lakes. The landscape’s astonishing diversity is on par with the broad array of fauna found there. The ‘World’s End’ is a dramatic precipice with a sheer drop of approximately 4,000 feet (1,200 m), making it a highly frequented segment of Horton Plains National Park and a prominent tourist destination in Sri Lanka.

Large mammals are rarely spotted in Horton Plains. The Sambar deer is a frequent sight at twilight and dawn. Mammals that are still present in significant numbers include the Kelaart’s long-clawed shrew (Feroculus feroculus), the slender loris (Loris tardigradus) which is endemic to the area, the montane toque macaque (Macaca sinica), the purple-faced langur (Presbutis entellus), the rusty-spotted cat (Felis rubigimosus), among others. The Horton Plains National Park is a sanctuary for 12 species of birds that are endemic, found nowhere else but in Horton Plains.
