Founded in 1993 by a local fisherman, Mr. Mataka, also known as Babakasa or Father of the Turtles, this initiative aims to conserve the sea turtle population in Zanzibar.
The mission focuses on educating fishermen about the importance of avoiding the intentional capture of sea turtles and promoting their safe release if accidentally caught. In a natural pond, injured turtles are rehabilitated and housed, while baby turtles are raised to enhance their survival chances. Every year, on February 20th, the turtles are released during the Annual Sea Turtle Release Day.
