Dakshin Kali Temple is nestled in a verdant valley, 22 kilometers south of Kathmandu. In Nepali, ‘Dakshin’ translates to ‘South’ and ‘Kali’ is the name of the Hindu goddess, making this temple a dedication to the goddess Kali of the South. The temple sees a significant influx of visitors on Tuesdays and Saturdays, when animal sacrifices are made to the deity. According to legend, Kali vanquished a demon and drank the fresh blood of animals. To this day, devotees honor the goddess by offering the blood of roosters or male goats, hoping that Kali will empower them to achieve success and fulfill their desires. The rituals at this well-preserved 17th-century temple are captivating. The unique atmosphere at Dakshin Kali invigorates the senses; as visitors descend the long staircase to the temple, they are enveloped by green hills, the sound of temple bells, women dressed in red, and the ancient ritual of blood sacrifice.
