• Lago di Carezza - Starting from Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites and the capital of South Tyrol, the journey crosses the Ega Valley, which begins in Bolzano and extends east between the Catinaccio and Latemar mountains. This road was constructed in 1894 when the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A stop at Lake Carezza, the most stunning lake in the western Dolomites, includes a 30-minute visit with an optional walk around the lake.
• Fassa Valley - Next, the route leads to Costalunga Pass. Near the Pass, the historic “Grand Hotel Carezza,” built in 1893, stands as the first luxury hotel in the Dolomites, having hosted notable guests like Empress Sissi, Winston Churchill, and Agatha Christie. From Costalunga Pass, the journey continues to the Fassa Valley in Trentino, passing through the towns of Vigo di Fassa and Canazei, reaching the majestic peaks of the Sella Group.
• Passo di Pordi - The journey proceeds to the Costalunga Pass. Nearby, the historic Grand Hotel Carezza, established in 1893, is recognized as the first luxury hotel in the Dolomites, welcoming distinguished guests such as Empress Sissi, Winston Churchill, and Agatha Christie. From Costalunga Pass, the route leads to the Fassa Valley in Trentino, passing through Vigo di Fassa and Canazei, arriving beneath the impressive Sella Group peaks. From here, a series of 27 hairpin bends leads to the renowned Pordoi Pass, situated at 2,239 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level. An hour-long journey is available if opting for the cable car to Sass Pordoi (2,950 meters; operational from late May to late October and from Christmas to Easter).
• Castello di Andraz - Just beyond the Falzarego Pass towards Alleghe lies Andraz Castle, one of the oldest castles in the Dolomites. Constructed in 1027 on a large landslide, it was built to protect the foundries and the road transporting iron mined at Monte Pore. The material underwent initial processing at the Castle before being distributed across Europe. The iron’s superior quality enabled the production of highly valued swords, even used in Scotland during the 13th-century rebellions depicted in Mel Gibson’s film “Braveheart.”
• Passo Falzarego - The route reaches the Falzarego Pass, entering the eastern Dolomites.
• Cortina d’Ampezzo - From the Pordoi Pass, the descent leads to the village of Arabba, continuing east to the Falzarego Pass, the entrance to the eastern Dolomites. The journey then reaches Cortina d’Ampezzo, the “Pearl of the Dolomites,” Italy’s premier mountain resort and host of the 1956 Winter Olympics. Cortina, along with Milan, will again host the Winter Olympics in 2026.
• Lago di Misurina - From Cortina, the route continues to Lake Misurina, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The lake, with views of the Tre Cime to the north and the Sorapis mountains to the south, is the most iconic image of the Dolomites worldwide.
• Lago Di Landro - In Alta Pusteria, within the Landro Valley, lies Lake Landro (Dürrensee), with its enchanting turquoise-green waters. Accessible from Dobbiaco, it is located in the Tre Cime Nature Park and borders the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park.
• Vista Panoramica Tre Cime Lavaredo - The Three Peaks of Lavaredo are among the most renowned symbols of the Dolomites and South Tyrol. These towering mountains, with their extraordinary rock formations, emerged over 200 million years ago and attract visitors globally. In 2009, their exceptional beauty earned the Dolomites, along with the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.
• Lago di Dobbiaco - Just 20 minutes from Misurina, there is an opportunity for a brief stop at another significant lake in the eastern Dolomites, Lake Dobbiaco.
• Lago di Braies - From Dobbiaco, in approximately 20 minutes, the journey reaches the far northeast of Italy, just a few kilometers from the Austrian border, culminating with a visit to the renowned Lake Braies. From Braies, the return to Bolzano takes an hour and 40 minutes through the Pusteria Valley and then the Isarco Valley.
