The Romans had long aimed to conquer Britain. Julius Caesar documented the wealth of the British Isles, as well as tales of giants and monsters. Although Caesar initiated contact with the Britons, a full-scale invasion would not occur for another 90 years. Political unrest in Rome prompted the new emperor, Claudius, to lead his forces to Britain’s shores, altering the nation permanently.
