Gondar – Sankabar (3-4 hours)
Semien Mountains - Begin with a transfer to Addis airport for a flight to the historic town of Gondar. Upon arrival at Gondar Airport or your hotel, enjoy a drive along a well-maintained road to the park headquarters in Debark. This 100 km journey takes approximately two hours. At the headquarters, permits for the park will be arranged, and a scout will be picked up. Following this, there will be an additional hour’s drive before embarking on the first introductory walk. This initial hike is gentle, tracing the northern edge of the escarpment, offering beautiful viewpoints over the foothills and plains of northern Ethiopia. Expect to see gelada baboons during this hike, with an overnight stay at Sankaber.
Trek Geech
Semien Mountains - Sankaber to Gich (3600 m), 5-6 hours. The trek follows the northern escarpment eastward, descending slightly into the Kaba Valley. Afterward, the path ascends before reaching Gich Abyss, continuing over a narrow ridge to a cliff with a breathtaking view of the abyss towards the Simien foothills. A large waterfall is found here, where the Jinbar River cascades 500 m into the abyss. The journey continues for about two hours, with lunch at the Jinbar River. Post-lunch, the walk proceeds through barley fields to the picturesque village of Gich. Here, a traditional coffee ceremony can be enjoyed in one of the huts, providing insight into local farm life. From Gich village, it’s a short walk to Gich camp, an excellent spot for observing lammergeyer and thick-billed raven. After a relaxing afternoon, a brief hike up to Kedadit offers a stunning sunset view and the beautiful shaded landscapes down to the cliffside in the eastern direction, before returning to the camp for dinner.
Trek Chenek
Semien Mountains - Gich to Chennek (3600 m), 7-8 hours. From Gich camp, the trail meanders through vast fields of Giant Lobelia before reaching the towering cliffs of Imet-Gogo (3926 m). Time is spent here to take in the magnificent views over the mountain valleys below and the uniquely shaped domes in the distance, which will be seen up close at the trip’s conclusion. The descent into the Jinbahir River Valley offers a different perspective of Imet-Gogo and the volcanic landscape, where it appears as though large mountain sections have been blown away. The trail follows the escarpment’s edge, which is completely vertical for several hundred meters. A climb to a summit of 4070 m is followed by lunch. Afterward, a descent to Chennek takes about two hours along a steep trail. From Chennek camp, there are breathtaking views in all directions. Relax on a bench at the escarpment and try to spot Walia Ibex in the late afternoon or early morning. Occasionally, Walia Ibex visit the camp’s edges.
Gondar to Addis Ababa
Gondar - Return to Gondar. Overnight stay at a hotel in Gondar, such as the Goha Hotel. Early in the morning, around 8:30/9:00, pick-up from the hotel begins the exploration of the city’s main attractions. The morning includes a visit to the oldest and most impressive Gonderine structure, the magnificent castle compound, featuring the two-storied palace of Emperor Fasiladas and the emperor’s bath, where Orthodox Christians celebrate Ethiopian Epiphany on January 19th. In the afternoon, visit the beautifully decorated Debre Brehan Silassie Church (Light of Trinity), and if time allows, explore the ruined palace of Queen Mintiwab at Qusquam, where the Scottish explorer James Bruce once resided. The tour concludes with a transfer to your designated location. Souvenirs can be purchased during this tour, and a transfer to Gondar Airport for a flight back to Addis Ababa marks the end of the tour.
