Monkeys, Caves, Ancient Trees and a Lot of Sweat - We were collected right on time by our guide for the day, Viet, who introduced himself and led us to our transfer vehicle, a private 7-seater that was comfortable and spacious. Once again, the air conditioning came to the rescue from the humid morning air. We made the journey to Cuc Phuong National Park to begin our day. The only slight frustration was a 50-minute wait at the start as some participants had not arrived on time, meaning the rest of us were left waiting before the tour could begin. As it turned out, this would be the longest period of inactivity we experienced all day. Our first stop was the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre, where Viet guided us around the facility. Masks were required to help protect the monkeys. The tour was informative and engaging, with detailed explanations about the different species, the conservation efforts being undertaken in Vietnam, and the long-term aim of returning rescued animals to the wild. The monkeys appeared far more interested in breakfast than the tourists, which is probably how it should be. Afterwards, we drove further into the park and walked to the Cave of Prehistoric Man, an ancient limestone cave where three skeletons were discovered in 1966. We ventured deep inside, spotting bats along the way, while Viet explained the history of the cave and the wildlife that inhabits it, including the snakes found within the area. Thankfully, we heard considerably more about the snakes than we actually saw of them. We then continued up the road for lunch. The meal consisted of a selection of dishes including spring rolls, rice, omelette and a chicken dish. Everything was very enjoyable and was followed by fresh watermelon, which was particularly refreshing in the heat. The highlight of the day came next: a 4-kilometre trek through the jungle to visit the Ancient Tree. As we made our way through the dense forest, the humidity certainly made itself known and sweat flowed freely. By this point, I was beginning to understand why the jungle grows so well, there’s enough water falling off tourists to keep it going. Along the route we saw a baby owl resting on the forest floor, numerous stick insects, and several impressive orb-weaver spiders. We also came across a tarantula burrow, with its resident spider resting safely inside. We admired it from a respectful distance and mutually agreed to leave each other alone. When we reached the Ancient Tree, we took time to appreciate its size and significance, with Viet once again providing fascinating information about its history and the surrounding ecosystem. Upon returning to the vehicle, Viet greeted us with ice-cold water and chilled wipes, which felt like absolute luxury after the hike. At that moment, he wasn’t just a guide, he was a hero carrying cold refreshments. Throughout the day he was knowledgeable, friendly and always willing to answer questions, helping to make the experience even more enjoyable. This was an absolutely fantastic day and one of the highlights of our time in Vietnam. If you plan to visit, come prepared. Bring plenty of water, leech socks, good hiking boots or walking shoes, and lightweight sports clothing suitable for hot and humid conditions. Heavy clothing such as jeans or cotton T-shirts will quickly become uncomfortable. Strong insect repellent is also highly recommended, as the mosquitoes are everywhere and seem delighted to welcome visitors to the jungle. A wonderful day of wildlife, history, conservation and jungle trekking.

Great tour in Cúc Phương... - Great tour in Cúc Phương National Park with a well-balanced program. The visit to the Monkey Rescue Center, the cave, and the jungle walk to the Ancient Tree were all really interesting, and the food was excellent. Our guide Viet was outstanding. He’s a biologist with deep knowledge of Vietnamese flora and fauna, explained everything clearly, and answered all questions. Very friendly, great English, and the tour was perfectly organized and felt safe throughout. Highly recommended if you’re interested in nature and wildlife.

An excellent way to experience nature in Vietnam - Had a great experience with this tour. Enjoyed seeing the endangered primates and hiking in the jungle. Guide was friendly and very knowledgeable about the park and its wildlife. He had an excellent eye for spotting animals, and pointed out many that I otherwise would not have seen. There was flooding in the park due to ongoing heavy rain, but he went above and beyond to make sure we got to see as much of the itinerary as possible.
