ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 15 - MARCH 16, 2025

Rainy Weekend Retreats: Crafting and Culture in Ứng Hòa, Hanoi

Discover the cultural richness of Ứng Hòa, Hanoi, with a weekend of indoor crafting and historical exploration. Despite the rain, immerse yourself in the art of incense making and the scenic beauty of Vietnam’s ancient capitals.

Embracing the Art of Incense Crafting

As the rain gently taps on the rooftops of Ứng Hòa, the air is filled with a sense of tranquility, perfect for a day of cultural immersion. Begin your weekend retreat with the Incense Making Experience on March 16th, starting at 8:30 AM. This journey takes you beyond the bustling streets of Hanoi into the heart of an incense village, where the art of crafting incense sticks has been passed down through generations.

Upon arrival, the village greets you with vibrant hues of red and orange incense sticks drying in the open air, a sight that is both mesmerizing and deeply spiritual. The experience is not just about observing; it’s about participating. Under the guidance of local artisans, you’ll learn the delicate process of incense making, from dyeing the sticks to setting them out to dry. This hands-on activity is complemented by a taste of traditional Vietnamese cuisine, offering a full sensory experience.

“Pleasantly Wonderful Discoveries - Getting to know Hanoi through Duc was fun, the experience full of learnings. We appreciate how accommodating he is. Enjoyed the drive to the countryside to visit the incense village and even tried our hand at dyeing the sticks and setting them out to dry. Loved the egg coffee in a cafe in one of the oldest houses of Hanoi. Overall enjoyed the day.” (Reviewed on 2023-06-18)

A Scenic Journey Through History

For those who wish to explore more of Vietnam’s rich history and natural beauty, the Scenic Full-Day Tour offers a perfect blend of both. Available on March 15th and 16th, this tour begins at 7:15 AM and takes you through the picturesque landscapes of Quang Phu Cau, Tam Coc, and Hoa Lu.

Start your day with a visit to Quang Phu Cau, where the vibrant incense village offers a visual feast. Capture the essence of Vietnamese culture as you photograph the intricate process of incense making, set against a backdrop of lush greenery. The journey continues to Tam Coc, often referred to as “Halong on land,” where a sampan boat ride reveals the stunning limestone karsts and serene rice paddies. This natural wonder is a testament to Vietnam’s breathtaking landscapes.

Conclude your day with a visit to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam. Here, the echoes of history resonate through the ancient temples and structures, offering a glimpse into the country’s storied past. The tour is a harmonious blend of culture, history, and nature, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a deeper understanding of Vietnam.

“Great day out - all correspondence was quick. Pick up was done very efficiently, nice limousine coach, very comfortable seats. It was drizzle the day we went and the company provided rain ponchos. Guide was great explaining about all the places we would visit. Food at lunch was adequate but as most tours arrived at the same time there was a lot of queuing with no order. A couple in our group gave up and went downstairs and paid for table service.” (Reviewed on 2023-03-31)

Culinary Delights and Cultural Insights

No cultural retreat is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Both activities offer a taste of Vietnam’s culinary heritage, from the renowned pho breakfast to the unique egg coffee, each dish tells a story of tradition and innovation. As you savor these flavors, you’ll find yourself immersed in the local way of life, gaining insights into the customs and traditions that define this vibrant region.

The rainy weather adds a layer of intimacy to these experiences, encouraging a slower pace and deeper connection with the surroundings. Whether you’re crafting incense or exploring ancient capitals, each moment is an opportunity to reflect and appreciate the rich tapestry of Vietnamese culture.

As the weekend draws to a close, you’ll leave Ứng Hòa with a newfound appreciation for its cultural treasures and the warmth of its people. This rainy weekend retreat is more than just a getaway; it’s a journey into the heart of Vietnam, where tradition and modernity coexist in perfect harmony.
