Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo Caves & Hobbiton

Waikato Region - Departing from Auckland, the journey heads south through the breathtaking Waikato countryside, renowned as the world’s largest farming area. Travelers will encounter stunning landscapes, mighty rivers, excellent photo opportunities, beautiful mountains, and various farm animals along the route. After learning about some local history, there is a stop in the charming town of Pirongia for a quick coffee break. The adventure continues through Otorohanga, known as “The Kiwiana capital of New Zealand,” where visitors can experience all things Kiwi in this unique and delightful town.

Waitomo Caves - Upon arrival at the first major attraction, guests will be guided through the ancient and awe-inspiring caves, witnessing various cave formations such as Stalactites, Stalagmites, and Lime Columns. The tour then descends further underground for the Glowworm experience. Visitors will board a boat for a cruise on the grotto river, with thousands of Glowworms sparkling above. Unique to New Zealand for over 120 years, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must-see for any traveler.

Hobbiton Movie Set - At the second major attraction, Hobbiton, there is time to purchase lunch before boarding one of the iconic green Hobbiton buses. Guests will embark on a two-hour fully guided tour of this incredible 12-acre movie set with a professional Hobbiton guide, ensuring a memorable visit. During the tour, visitors can step into the lush pastures of the Shire, explore 44 hobbit holes, admire stunning gardens, hear secrets and stories about the making of the movies, and enjoy a complimentary beverage at the famous Hobbiton pub, ‘The Green Dragon Inn’.

Tirau - The adventure continues towards Rotorua, passing through Tirau, famously known as the ‘Corrugated Iron Capital of the World’ due to its unique corrugated iron sculptures and buildings. This town always brings a smile, and the guides will highlight all the main attractions along the way.

Rotorua - To conclude the formal part of the first day’s tour, the journey arrives in Rotorua for a quick guided driving tour, showcasing the most famous sites in Rotorua city, including Lake Rotorua, Rotorua Museum, Government Gardens, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring), and the Blue Baths. Guests are then dropped off at their hotels to check in for the night, but the day doesn’t have to end there. An optional Maori cultural evening experience and Traditional Hangi Buffet Dinner are recommended to complete the Rotorua experience.

Rotorua to Auckland via Taupo & Hamilton Gardens

Wai-O-Tapu - Day two begins with excitement, heading straight to Wai-O-Tapu to witness the eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser, followed by a fully guided tour of Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland. Considered one of the most surreal places on earth, visitors will see the famous Champagne Lake, Devil’s Bath, local mud-pools, geothermal craters, and other geothermal wonders. The vibrant colors and activity are truly breathtaking.

Taupo - The journey continues south towards Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake, which is actually a giant volcanic crater responsible for one of the largest eruptions ever recorded. There is time to purchase lunch before enjoying a Taupo highlights tour and learning fascinating local facts.

Huka Falls tracks - As the journey heads north again, there is a stop at Huka Falls, one of New Zealand’s most popular and stunning waterfalls.

Hamilton Gardens - In Hamilton, New Zealand’s fastest-growing city, visitors can explore the unexpected delights at Hamilton Gardens, where 18 Enclosed Gardens transport them through diverse cultures and times.

Auckland - Unfortunately, the journey must continue north towards the tour’s endpoint, but the day is not over, with a fully guided return trip to Auckland featuring secret stops along the way.
