During Prohibition, it functioned as a speakeasy, producing wine and whiskey in its basement. A notable event linked to John’s is the 1922 assassination of Umberto Rocco Valenti, a Morello family hitman, who was killed there during a “peace meeting.” The restaurant’s old-world charm and Mafia connections have cemented its legendary status, even earning features in shows like Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos.
