Pigs, Sharks, and Iguanas: A Day in the Exumas
When the allure of the Exumas called, I couldn’t resist the chance to swim with pigs and explore the vibrant marine life. Join me as I recount a day filled with adventure, laughter, and the stunning beauty of the Bahamas.
Setting Sail to the Exumas
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I found myself at the Royal lobby, ready to embark on an adventure that promised to be unlike any other. The Exumas Swim with Pigs Tour had been on my radar for a while, and I finally decided to take a day away from the usual surf and sand to experience something truly unique. With a group of fellow adventurers, we made our way to the boat dock, excitement buzzing in the air.
The ride from Nassau to the Exumas was an adventure in itself. The open ocean stretched out before us, and the seas were a bit choppy, with waves reaching about two feet. It was a bumpy ride, but the thrill of the journey only added to the anticipation. Our crew, Ron and Bryant, were fantastic, ensuring everyone was comfortable and well-fed with snacks and drinks, including some refreshing mojitos. As someone who spends a lot of time on the water, I relished the challenge of the ride, holding on tight and enjoying every moment.
Encountering the Wild and Wonderful
Our first stop was an island teeming with life. We were greeted by the sight of endemic iguanas and a variety of birds, all eager for a snack. Feeding these creatures was a delight, and it set the tone for the rest of the day. The connection with nature was palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the beauty of the Exumas.
Next, we made our way to Compass Cay, where we had the chance to interact with friendly nurse sharks. Swimming alongside these gentle giants was an experience I’ll never forget. Their smooth skin and calm demeanor made for a serene encounter, and I found myself completely at ease in their presence. It was a reminder of the incredible diversity of marine life that calls the Caribbean home.
Finally, we arrived at the main attraction: Pig Beach. The pigs were a sight to behold, running freely along the beach, their playful antics bringing smiles to everyone’s faces. Our guide provided bags of carrots, and we fed the pigs as they splashed around in the water. They were certainly domesticated, but their spirited nature made for an unforgettable experience. Listening to the guide’s instructions ensured we had the best time, and I couldn’t help but laugh at the pigs’ antics.
A Perfect Ending to a Perfect Day
After the excitement of Pig Beach, we stopped for lunch at Lorraine’s Cafe, a local gem that served up a delicious Bahamian buffet. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of the islands that left me satisfied and ready for more adventure.
On our way back to Nassau, we made two more stops that perfectly encapsulated the beauty of the Exumas. The first was a secluded sand bar, where the crystal-clear waters and pristine sands created a picture-perfect scene. The second stop was at a deserted beach, where the only footprints were our own. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a chance to soak in the serenity of the surroundings.
As we made our way back to Nassau, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Exumas Swim with Pigs Tour had exceeded all expectations, offering a day filled with wonder, laughter, and unforgettable memories. For anyone considering taking a day away from the usual resort activities, I can’t recommend this tour enough. It’s a chance to connect with nature, experience the unique charm of the Exumas, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Just remember to bring your own towel!
