Enveloped in enigma, accompanied by rhythmic drums, and featuring some of the most captivating and potent deities in contemporary theology, voodoo has captivated outsiders since its arrival in New Orleans.
The tour commences on Basin Street, just a short distance from the renowned tomb believed to contain the remains of Marie Laveau herself. Following a concise introduction to the distinctions between Haitian Voodoo, New Orleans Voodoo, Santeria, and Hoodoo, participants are guided to Congo Square, the site of Laveau’s numerous ceremonies and rituals. From this revered location, the journey continues to Laveau’s former residence, where she raised her children by day and engaged in spiritual practices with a large snake draped around her neck by night. On Dauphine Street, tales of zombies, pandemic history, and vintage propaganda await, as the guide unveils the reality of voodoo dolls and traditional Afro-Caribbean medicine, all viewed through the perspective of ancestor worship and “magic” in America’s Most Haunted City.
