Rainy Weekend Retreat: Indoor Adventures in New Orleans

Discover the hidden gems of New Orleans this rainy weekend with indoor adventures that bring the city’s rich history to life. From exploring historic cemeteries to indulging in the vibrant arts scene, there’s no shortage of captivating experiences waiting for you.

Embracing the Mystique of New Orleans’ Cemeteries

As the rain gently taps on the windows of your hotel room, consider stepping into the rich tapestry of New Orleans’ history with a visit to the Metairie Cemetery. This isn’t just any cemetery; it’s a sprawling 65-acre landscape that serves as the final resting place for some of the city’s most notable figures. On June 15th, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, you can join a guided tour with Save Our Cemeteries and explore the grand funerary architecture that has earned accolades from Forbes.

The cemetery is a testament to the city’s diverse cultural heritage, with Greek temples, Gothic and Islamic style tombs, and marble monuments adorned with intricate ironwork and stained glass. As you wander through the lush surroundings, you’ll encounter the graves of nine Louisiana governors, seven New Orleans mayors, and even legendary bandleaders like Louis Prima and Al Hirt. The tour is not just a walk through history; it’s a journey into the soul of New Orleans, where every tombstone tells a story.

Fantastic experience! My mom and I loved our tour through Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery. The guide’s passion for the history of New Orleans and his fascinating stories about the various people interred there made the tour fascinating. (Reviewed on 2025-05-17)

A Spirited Evening in the French Quarter

As the afternoon clouds gather, signaling the approach of evening, it’s time to delve into the spirited side of New Orleans with the Haunted Drunken History Tour. Available on both June 14th and 15th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, this tour offers a unique blend of history and revelry. Led by a local guide, you’ll explore the French Quarter’s key landmarks while savoring some of the city’s acclaimed beverages.

The tour kicks off with a visit to the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, where you’ll discover the intriguing world of early medicines and superstitious cures. As you continue your journey, you’ll stop by historic bars like Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop and Pirate’s Alley Cafe, each with its own tale to tell. The evening culminates at Tujague’s, a Creole dining institution that has been a favorite for over 160 years.

10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND! We could not have had a better time with our tour guide, who was not only hilarious and charismatic but offered stories that felt authentic to real New Orleans history. (Reviewed on 2025-03-12)
