- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Begin your day at 8:00 am with a pickup from your hotel by a tour guide to embark on a full-day tour of the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. This museum showcases the largest and most valuable collection of Egyptian art globally, featuring over 250,000 authentic artifacts dating back 5,000 years. Commonly referred to as the Egyptian Museum or Museum of Cairo, it is located in Cairo, Egypt, and houses an extensive array of ancient Egyptian antiquities. With 120,000 items, a significant portion is on display while the rest are stored. Constructed in 1901 by the Italian firm Garozzo-Zaffarani and designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, it stands as one of the largest museums in the region. As of March 2019, the museum is open to the public, and in 2021, it is set to be replaced by the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.
- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - The Hanging Church derives its name from its position above a gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress, a Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo); its nave is suspended over a passage. The church is accessed by twenty-nine steps, leading early visitors to call it “the Staircase Church.” Over time, the land surface has risen by approximately six meters since the Roman era, causing the Roman tower to be mostly buried, which diminishes the church’s elevated appearance.
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - The exact founding date of the Ben Ezra Synagogue is unknown, but documents from the geniza suggest it predates 882 CE and is likely pre-Islamic. In 882, the patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria sold a church and its grounds to a Jewish group, leading some 19th-century scholars to believe this marked the beginning of Ben Ezra. However, the buyers were followers of the Talmudic Academies in Babylonia, while Ben Ezra adhered to the teachings of the rival Talmudic Academies in Syria Palaestina. Modern scholars concur that the 882 land sale was to a different synagogue.
Little is known about the original structure. Around 1012, Fatimid caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah ordered the demolition of all Jewish and Christian worship places. The original Ben Ezra Synagogue was dismantled, with its materials sold for scrap.
- Coptic Cairo - Coptic Cairo is a section of Old Cairo that includes the Babylon Fortress, the Coptic Museum, the Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, and numerous other Coptic churches and historical sites. Christian tradition holds that the Holy Family visited this area and stayed at the site of Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church (Abu Serga). Coptic Cairo served as a bastion for Christianity in Egypt both before and during the Islamic era, with most of its churches constructed after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in the 7th century.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي) is a renowned bazaar and souq in Cairo’s historic center, Egypt. Established during the Mamluk era as a trade hub and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has evolved into a major attraction for both tourists and Egyptians. It is also home to numerous Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs.
At the conclusion of the tour, you will be transported back to your hotel.
