Negombo - Located on Sri Lanka’s west coast, north of Colombo, Negombo is a vibrant city. Near the waterfront, the remnants of a 17th-century Dutch Fort now serve as a prison. The Negombo Lagoon, bordered by fishermen’s huts, connects to the Dutch-era Hamilton Canal, which extends south to Colombo. The neoclassical St. Mary’s Church, completed in the 1920s, boasts a ceiling adorned with vivid religious paintings. Negombo is a charming beach town, just 10 kilometers from Bandaranaike International Airport, and is the first destination with stunning sandy beaches encountered upon arrival in Sri Lanka.
Minneriya National Park - Centrally located in the Cultural Triangle, Minneriya offers a serene alternative to the busier parks in the south. It’s easy to incorporate a jeep safari here while exploring the ancient sites in the area. The dry season, from June to September, is ideal for visiting the 8,890-hectare park. During this time, the ancient tank that dominates the area recedes, allowing grasses and shoots to emerge. Visitors can witness herds of up to 150 elephants feeding and bathing, an event known as ‘The Elephant Gathering,’ the largest congregation of Asian elephants worldwide.
Sigiriya to Kandy
Sigiriya - Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near Dambulla in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. The site, of historical and archaeological importance, is dominated by a massive rock column nearly 200 meters (660 ft) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Culavamsa, King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) chose this site for his new capital. He constructed his palace atop the rock and adorned its sides with colorful frescoes. Enjoy lunch (our guide will recommend the best spot) and visit the Dambulla Rock Temple. Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, with the rock towering 160 meters over the plains. Over 80 documented caves are in the vicinity, with major attractions spread across five caves containing statues and paintings.
Kandy - Nestled among mountains, home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforests, Kandy’s heart is the scenic Kandy Lake, popular for leisurely strolls. Kandy is renowned for its sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession. It was the last capital of the Sinhala kings, whose patronage allowed the Dinahala culture to thrive for over 2,500 years until the British occupation in 1815. The Temple of the Tooth Relic, housing the sacred tooth of the Buddha, is a famous pilgrimage site and one of the world’s most renowned Buddhist temples, built to safeguard the sacred tooth relic believed to belong to Lord Buddha.
Kandy to Knuckles
Knuckles Mountain Range - Situated in central Sri Lanka, northeast of Kandy, the Knuckles Mountain Range derives its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks resembling the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District. While early British surveyors named it, the Sinhalese residents traditionally call it Dumbara Kandu Watiye, meaning mist-laden mountain range. The area is known for its breathtaking landscapes often shrouded in clouds, and it holds significant scientific interest as a climatic microcosm of Sri Lanka. Riverston Trekking is a popular adventure activity to experience in Sri Lanka.
Knuckles to Kithulgala
Kitulgala - Kitulgala is a quaint town in western Sri Lanka, located in the wet zone rainforest, which experiences two monsoons annually, making it one of the country’s wettest places. However, it becomes lively in the first three months of the year, especially in February, the driest month. The Academy Award-winning film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” was shot on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, though only the concrete foundations for the bridge remain today, along with the submerged train cars from the climactic scene. Kitulgala serves as a base for white-water rafting, which begins a few kilometers upstream. This activity is suitable for anyone over the age of 10, with safety gear, modern rafts, and a comprehensive safety briefing provided by our white-water rafting instructors beforehand. After the adventure, enjoy a refreshing river bath.
Kitulgala
Makandawa Forest Reserve - Start the day with a takeaway breakfast and head to Kithulgala for bird watching. The early morning bird watching trail in the Makandawa rainforest patch is a highlight for nature enthusiasts, offering sightings of many of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species, such as the Sri Lanka Orange-billed babbler and chestnut-backed owlet, as well as reptiles like the green pit viper and earless lizard, and a variety of butterflies. Continue bird watching in the evening.
Kitulgala to Colombo to Airport
Colombo - Begin with a visit to the Fort and Pettah commercial hub, featuring offices and shopping areas amidst the oldest colonial hotel, GOH. Enjoy a fantastic view of the Colombo harbor, a lighthouse with a clock tower (older than Big Ben in London) near the president’s house and old parliament. Proceed along the main street, passing the old Dutch Museum, belfry, and old City Hall, which houses puppets of former Sri Lankan governors. Stops will be made at the Old Dutch hospital, with shops and restaurants facing Sri Lanka’s twin tower buildings. Continue to the old racecourse, featuring a maze of colonial architecture, restaurants, and shopping arcades, passing through Colombo City Hall (a mini replica of the White House in Washington, DC). Enjoy shopping in Colombo.
