Long drive, spotted a leopard - I was picked up just after 2 am. It took about 3 hours from my hotel in Negombo to drive. The first gate we went to was not open due to heavy rain overnight, so we had to go to the more central gate. We got there around 6:15 am. The washrooms are disgusting and have no toilet paper or soap. Once we got on the tour, we saw a lot of birds, crocodiles, lizards, but only 1 elephant. A leopard was spotted in the bush. Although I was maybe 5 meters away from it, our vehicle backed up and let others see it. I expressed my disappointment quite profusely and finally about 30 mins later we moved back to where we were and I saw Leopard spots in the bush. I could not see a face and if I did bot have a high zoom lense on a real camera, I would never have seen it. In our race to see the leopard, our driver was flying. My hair became almost petrified by the wind, so i recommend wearing a hat or a bandana. Both the safari jeep and my vehicle had reasonable leg space. Insects do fly into the safari jeep, so it is a good idea to have bug spray and wear sunglasses at a minimum. My driver and the safari driver were good. The roads are filled with stray dogs before you start thr safari and potholes in thr safari area. They expertly navigated everything. I understand that the safari driver is not a naturalist, but many of the drivers are good at spotting and identifying animals. I was offered and provided snacks. I asked for and heard some nice Sihalese music. After the safari, my driver was kind enough to stop at a grocery store so that I could get some items I needed and also stopped in the road for a king coconut! It was a good safari which likely would have been better had the area not had such heavy rain and if there was not a traffic jam for the leopard spotting. I did a safari in Yala later on my tour. The toilets were much cleaner, there was no shortage of elephants to see and we were lucky to see a leopard on the road. Overall, I found my actual safari at Yala better than Wilpatu, but the driver and guide at Wilpatu were very good. If the weather was better, I am sure Wilpatu would be just as good as Yala.

Lots of driving but great experience - Lots of driving, 3 hours each way and a circa 4 hour safari. However the car was comfortable and the guide was very pleasant. The safari was great. Knowledgeable driver, went hunting for the best animals. Great
