- Negombo Fish Market - The first stop is the second largest fish market on the island. Known locally as Lellama (Lel-La-Ma), it is the country’s second largest fish market. Located at the northern end of the Negombo Lagoon, it is visible from the lagoon bridge, also called Munnakare Bridge. Around 4,000 boats set sail from here daily. Starting at 3:30 am, the market is bustling with activity all day, with people buying and negotiating over fish. This lively market offers tourists the chance to buy fish and interact with local fishermen. It also provides opportunities to arrange fishing trips and boat excursions into the lagoon and ocean, as well as learn about the fishing industry.
Visitors will also be guided to the small fish market and the fish drying area.

St. Mary’s Church - St. Mary’s Church is a prominent Roman Catholic church located in the heart of Negombo. It is one of the largest Catholic churches in Sri Lanka. The church is built in a neoclassical style with columns and plain walls. Its ceilings are adorned with alabaster images of various saints. The upper walls feature sculptures of religious saints. The unique ceiling paintings depicting the life of Christ were created by N.S. Godamanne, a local Buddhist artist. The beauty of the nave paintings is described as “thunderous.” A benefactor funded one of the altars, which was imported from Europe.

Dutch Fort - The Dutch Fort in Negombo, sometimes referred to as the Negombo Fort, was a significant fortification built by the Portuguese about 30 kilometers north of Colombo to protect their stronghold city. Sri Lanka’s history is marked by periods of harsh colonization under foreign rule, and the remnants of those war-torn eras can be seen in structures like the forts at Galle, Colombo, and as far north as Jaffna, which still stand today.

Negombo Lagoon - The lagoon is fed by several small rivers and the Hamilton Canal, also known as the Dutch Canal. It connects to the sea via a narrow channel to the north, near Negombo city. The surrounding area is densely populated and includes rice paddies, coconut plantations, and grasslands. The land is used for fishing and agriculture. The lagoon features extensive mangrove swamps and attracts a wide variety of water birds, including cormorants, herons, egrets, gulls, terns, and other waders. Nearby towns include Negombo, Katunayake, and Seeduwa. Lagoon fishing is popular among the local fishing community, with lagoon crabs and prawns being highly sought after.

Dutch Canal - The Hamilton Canal, commonly known as the Dutch Canal, is a 14.5 km (9.0 mi) waterway connecting Puttalam to Colombo, passing through Negombo in Sri Lanka. Constructed by the British between 1802 and 1804, it was designed to drain saltwater from the Muthurajawela wetlands. Named after Gavin Hamilton, the Government Agent of Revenue and Commerce, the canal runs through Negombo and serves as both a vital transportation route and a tourist attraction.
