Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri, is an ancient rock fortress in the northern Matale District near Dambulla in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. The site, of historical and archaeological importance, is dominated by a massive rock column nearly 200 meters (660 ft) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Chulavamsa, King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) chose this site for his new capital. He constructed his palace atop the rock and adorned its sides with vibrant frescoes. Halfway up, he built a gateway shaped like a giant lion. After the king’s death, the capital and palace were abandoned and later used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Today, Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a prime example of ancient urban planning.

Over 80 documented caves are in the area, with major attractions spread across five caves containing statues and paintings related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of gods and goddesses, including Vishnu and Ganesha. The murals cover 2,100 square meters (23,000 sq ft), depicting scenes like the demon Mara’s temptation and Buddha’s first sermon. Prehistoric Sri Lankans likely lived in these caves before Buddhism’s arrival, as burial sites with 2700-year-old human skeletons have been found nearby at Ibbankatuwa.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is a Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is part of the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy and houses the Buddha’s tooth relic. Historically, the relic has been crucial in local politics, as it is believed that whoever holds the relic governs the country. Bhikkhus from the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters conduct daily worship in the temple’s inner chamber, with rituals performed three times daily: at dawn, noon, and evening. Le Mesurier (Assistant Government Agent for Nuwara Eliya) stocked the lake with trout.
