Fort Charlotte - Fort Charlotte, built during Lord Dunmore’s governorship (1787-1796), was named after King George III’s wife. It comprises three forts: Fort Charlotte (east), Fort Stanley (middle), and Fort D’Arcy (west). Constructed from solid rock, the forts were completed in 1819. A dry moat surrounds Fort Charlotte, crossed by a wooden bridge on the north side. The forts in New Providence and The Bahamas created such a formidable defense that they deterred invaders, and thus, never fired a shot in battle.
-
Fort Fincastle - Built in 1793, Fort Fincastle was named after British captain Lord Dunmore, also known as Viscount Fincastle. It was constructed to safeguard Nassau Harbour and monitor pirate activity. Positioned atop Bennet’s Hill, the highest point on New Providence Island, the fort offers stunning views of Nassau, Paradise Island, and the eastern approaches to New Providence. Its intimidating presence alone deterred potential attackers, as its cannons were never used. Open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Queen’s Staircase - Known as the 66 steps, the Queen’s Staircase is a significant landmark within the Fort Fincastle Historic Complex in Nassau. Carved from solid limestone by slaves between 1793 and 1794, it provided a direct route from Fort Fincastle to Nassau City. Named in honor of Queen Victoria, who ruled Britain for 64 years from 1837 to 1901, only 65 steps are visible today due to paving that buried the bottom step. A fantastic spot for photos.

Rawson Square - Situated in downtown Nassau, Rawson Square serves as the entry point to the city for cruise-ship passengers. Named after Sir Rawson W. Rawson, Governor of The Bahamas in the late 1860s, the square features a bronze bust of Sir Milo Butler, the first Bahamian Governor General of an independent Bahamas. A fountain named after Sir Stafford Sands, the first Bahamian Minister of Tourism, is also located here.
-
Parliament Square - Constructed in 1815 by the Loyalists, the buildings in Parliament Square are inspired by those in New Bern, the former capital of North Carolina. These flamingo-pink government buildings are prime examples of colonial architecture in old Nassau. The House of Assembly, where parliamentary meetings occur, is on the right. The Senate convenes upstairs in the center building, while the office of the Leader of the Opposition is on the left. A statue of Queen Victoria, funded by public donations in 1905, stands in front of the Senate building. Behind the Senate building is the Supreme Court, which has occupied this site since 1921. This is where the Bahamas Superior Court and Court of Appeal sessions are held, with judges and lawyers in traditional British wigs and robes.
