Must See & Experience!!! - I have been an avid NMAAM goer since its opening- really, I supported the museum BEFORE it opened, and I have been a regular patron and visit at least 2-3 a year. I make it a point to take all of my family and out-of-town guests routinely. I love the history and how the music connects to the African American experience and shapes the entire culture. I could spend hours and hours here, and the interactive activities are fun for all ages. The exhibits change from time to time, but the only thing that I totally miss is the 360 film of Prince at the Super Bowl (fingers crossed that that will come back!)

Must see!! Definitely do not miss!! - This was a powerful and enjoyable experience. Definitely recommend! 10 out of 10!! danced, I laughed and I cried. This museum traces the history of African-Americans pre-slavery to present. You will learn so much and you will be singing along.

Unique and Worth It - What a beautiful experience! This museum really immerses you in the feeling of the history of black artists in music through the literal decades. All at once, you feel transported to a distant time and space and really get the feeling of being in a musical experience. They have all types of immersive experiences and you can dance and sing your heart away. I have never quite been to a museum such as this one. It was just wonderful and I didn't know what to expect but I was truly blown away at the thought and consideration that went into its curation.

Musi History - It is not laid out in exact chronological order but chronological order in each segment. It is really large and spread out. Quite a lot of information.

One of the best Museums we have ever visited - Amazing museum. Really well run - very informative and great for the older members of the family who grew up in England with Blues, Rock, Soul, Jazz, etc. Children in our party really enjoyed the immersive experiences - doing their own rap, dance moves, etc. You can create a personal playlist with all the music you find that you like as you tour the exhibits - brilliant place.

A Great Look at the Influence and Persistence of African culture in Music - The museum does such a living and caring way of presenting history as it is. From the roots introduction movie to the exhibits that move you through the ages. They have interactive stations to give you more history, and the option to play with music and build your own beats, songs, rap battles and more. I learned so much about the influence and power of African American culture and had a great time doing it even with the more somber and heartbreaking topics in history.

Grooving to Growth - We went and was celebrated with the cultured. Even though this place is small it is mighty. You first sit and learn through a brief video of history. It’s vibrant and captivating. I was enthralled and didn’t want to leave actually. This is carried over throughout the museum. I would much like a guided tour because it’s so much to take in. I hope more is added because I did feel a little like this could be a Smithsonian lead idea where since it so much reading more it’s needed to tell the story. Well worth the trip.

Call before you go - My wife and I visited Nashville this past weekend to celebrate her birthday, and one of the experiences she was most excited about was visiting the National Museum of African American Music. I purchased tickets through Viator about a week in advance, expecting we’d have ample time to fully explore and enjoy the exhibits. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the museum around 1:30 PM, we were informed that we only had about 45 minutes to view the exhibits due to the museum closing early that day. We were told that the space had been booked on short notice, which required an early shutdown. While staff did mention that we could return the next day for free, that wasn’t an option for us since we were leaving town the following day. We were also unaware ahead of time that admission was free due to MLK weekend, and more importantly, we were not notified in advance that the museum would be closing early. The museum officially opened at noon, so arriving at 1:30 PM did not seem unreasonable. Because of the time constraint, the experience felt rushed, and we weren’t able to fully engage with or appreciate the exhibits as intended. This was disappointing, especially given the significance of the museum and the anticipation surrounding the visit. With better communication—whether through Viator or direct notification about the early closure—we could have adjusted our plans accordingly. The museum itself is meaningful and impactful, and I truly wish we’d had the time to experience it properly. I hope future visitors are given clearer advance notice so they can fully enjoy everything the museum has to offer.
