- Natchez Trace Parkway - Embarking on a drive along the Natchez Trace Parkway offers a captivating journey through the rich history and stunning natural landscapes of the American South. This unique national park is essentially a scenic ribbon of parkway, surrounded by the serene countryside and occasionally urban areas. The route closely follows the historic path of the original Trace, a network of trails once used by Native Americans and later by European explorers and traders, preserving the legacy of these early travelers.
The entire Parkway extends over 444 miles from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee. However, this tour currently focuses on the Tennessee and Alabama sections, and you can enjoy this tour in either direction.
With audio guides providing commentary based on your GPS location, you can tailor your itinerary along the tour route to suit your interests and schedule.
- Jackson Falls - Even residents of Nashville who aren’t specifically on a Natchez Trace road trip enjoy visiting Jackson Falls. It is one of the nearest waterfalls to the city and offers the most impressive waterfall experience with minimal effort. These falls are named after President Andrew Jackson.
Admiring the view from the top of the falls is rewarding, but walking at least halfway down the path is even more enjoyable. Continuing to the bottom reveals a clear pool and the beauty of the water cascading down a limestone outcropping.
- Leipers Fork - A brief 5-minute detour off the Parkway leads to the charming community of Leiper’s Fork. While exploring the small selection of shops, restaurants, and galleries, you might even encounter some of country music’s biggest stars. This community is home to some true headliners!
- Meriwether Lewis Park and Monument - Meriwether Lewis, the leader of the renowned Lewis and Clark expedition, was tasked with exploring the unknown lands west of the Mississippi River, a journey that forever changed the USA.
The site features the Monument to Lewis and a reproduction of Grinder’s Stand, the lodging where Lewis’ life ended. It’s an intriguing place to visit, not a somber one! The area also hosts a major campground and offers some pleasant short hiking trails.
- Muscle Shoals - This captivating region is too close to the Natchez Trace Parkway to miss a side trip to explore the major attractions of the Quad City area. There are five notable sites, and you can choose to visit one, all, or just a few. If time permits, it’s easy to spend a day seeing everything. It takes about 20 minutes to drive off the Trace to reach the nearest site.
These fascinating places include: Ivy Green - The childhood home of Helen Keller, The Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Muscle Shoals’ two iconic recording studios, The Florence Mound and Museum, and The Rosenbaum House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
- Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge - The final major addition that completed the Parkway’s continuous path, and perhaps the most visually striking! Uniquely constructed with two concrete arches spanning the valley, this is a photo opportunity you won’t want to miss on your Natchez Trace journey.
- Old Trace Drive - One of the few spots on the Parkway where you can drive (rather than walk) on the authentic, original Trace route. This section is a narrow, one-way journey of 2.5 miles that offers excellent views while following the historic path. A very worthwhile short detour!
- Rock Spring - A simple and quick spot to visit, featuring picturesque scenery highlighted by the square stepping stones that cross Colbert Creek on the trail to the natural spring.
- War of 1812 Memorial - The Trace served as an effective route for moving troops and cavalry, as Andrew Jackson did in 1813. The Memorial honors those who marched the route, especially those who lost their lives and were buried in unmarked graves.
