Oshino Hakkai - Oshino Hakkai is a picturesque village in Yamanashi Prefecture, renowned for its eight crystal-clear ponds nourished by the melted snow of Mount Fuji. The area provides magnificent views of the mountain, traditional thatched-roof houses, and fresh spring water. Visitors can savor local delicacies, such as soba noodles and grilled fish, while exploring this serene, culturally rich destination.
-
Lake Ashinoko - Lake Ashi offers stunning views, and the Hakone Shrine is famous for its large red torii gate along the lake’s shore, known as the “Gate of Peace” (heiwa no torii). This torii gate was erected in 1952 to honor the crown prince’s reign and Japan’s independence (peace treaty conclusion). Visitors can enjoy pirate ship rides or the ropeway cable car, with separate entry fees.
-
Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu - Hakone Shrine (箱根神社, Hakone Jinja) is located at the base of Mount Hakone along Lake Ashi’s shores. The shrine buildings are nestled in a dense forest, marked by its large torii gates, one prominently in the lake and two others over Moto-Hakone’s main street. A path leads from the torii gate in Lake Ashi up a series of steps lined with lanterns through the forest to the shrine’s main building, which rests peacefully among tall trees. The shrine is beautiful year-round, especially when enveloped in mist. A second shrine, Mototsumiya (“original shrine”), is at the summit of Komagatake, one of Mount Hakone’s peaks, accessible by the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway from Hakone-en or via hiking trails.
-
Hakone Ropeway - The observation platform offers stunning views of ‘Owakudani’, Hakone’s most renowned tourist spot. The barren mountainside, covered by smoke plumes, creates a scene reminiscent of the area’s former name, Hell Valley. The Hakone Ropeway ascends above Owakudani, offering many scenic views. Traveling from Sounzan to Owakudani, passengers can see the valley below, and on the route to Togendai, they can enjoy views of Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi.
