• Nara Park - Nara Park is a must-visit destination in Nara City and is among Japan’s oldest parks. Spanning 660 hectares, it is famous for its free-roaming deer and renowned temples. These gentle deer, considered sacred messengers of the Shinto gods, roam freely in Nara. Over time, they have learned to bow to visitors as a gesture for a treat.

For over 1,300 years, humans and deer have coexisted peacefully in Nara. Today, they are protected as Natural Monuments and are revered as holy animals in the region.

• Todai-ji Temple - Todai-ji is one of Japan’s most iconic and historically significant temples, serving as a landmark in Nara. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara,” alongside seven other sites including temples, shrines, and locations in Nara City.

The temple’s main hall, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), is recognized as the world’s largest wooden building. This impressive structure houses one of Japan’s largest bronze Buddha statues (Daibutsu). The 15-meter-tall seated Buddha represents Vairocana and is accompanied by two Bodhisattvas.

• Kyoto Prefectural Uji Park - The Kyoto Prefectural Uji Park is an island park encircled by the Uji River, which splits the water’s flow downstream. The park is linked to the riverbanks by three bridges and features a 13th-century stone pagoda standing 15 meters tall.

In spring, the park offers stunning views of cherry blossom forests, with birds soaring in the sky. Red bridges connect the pathways on both sides of the river, and it’s fascinating to watch ducks diving into the swift river to catch fish.

• Byodoin Omotesando - Uji is famous for its green tea production, and this delightful street is lined with shops offering a variety of tea and tea-related products. It is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Uji, as it highlights Japan’s rich tea heritage and offers a glimpse into its captivating history.

As visitors stroll down the cobblestone path, the air is filled with the enticing aroma of freshly roasted tea leaves. Here, one can try tea-flavored “dango” dumplings, noodles, ice creams, and donuts. Take time to explore the souvenir shops and eateries. At the end of the street, there is a Starbucks serving its popular Matcha Frappé.

• Uji River - The Uji River is the only river originating from Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. It has historically served as a vital waterway connecting Shiga and Osaka.

The river flows through Uji, dividing the city into two parts and acting as a central focal point, with most shops and restaurants situated along its banks. Uji Bridge, the main crossing over the river, is considered one of the three oldest bridges in the country.

• Senbon Torii - Among the approximately 30,000 Inari shrines in Japan, Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine dedicated to worshiping the Shinto god of rice, Inari. The shrine is famous for Senbon Torii, thousands of vermilion red torii gates, creating a breathtaking and immersive tunnel-like pathway up the sacred Mount Inari.

Since its establishment in 711 AD, people have gathered here to pray for abundant harvests, business success, the safety of their homes and families, and the fulfillment of various wishes.
