The state of conservation of the ancient Roman city is however remarkable and the excavations undertaken since the 18th century will bring to light a thriving city, a precious testimony of the urban planning and civilization of ancient Rome. The archaeological site has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1997, together with Herculaneum.
