• Giraffe Centre - Situated in Lang’ata, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Nairobi’s center, the Giraffe Centre was established to protect the endangered giraffe species native to East Africa’s grasslands.

Founded in 1979 by Jock Leslie Melville, a Kenyan with Scottish heritage, the Giraffe Centre began as a sanctuary for wildlife conservation education aimed at urban school children. Jock and his wife Betty initiated a giraffe breeding program on their Langata property, which is now the site of the Centre. The program has been highly successful, leading to the introduction of several Rothschild Giraffe breeding pairs into Kenya’s national parks.

By 1983, sufficient funds were raised to open the Giraffe Visitor’s Center as a tourist attraction near Nairobi. The main highlight for both school children and tourists is feeding giraffes from an elevated observation deck. The Centre also hosts several warthogs that roam freely alongside the giraffes.

• Karen Blixen Museum - This charming farmhouse is where Karen Blixen, the renowned author of “Out of Africa,” resided from 1914 to 1931, before leaving Kenya due to personal hardships.
