Myeongdong is an essential destination for tourists visiting Korea. Situated in the heart of Seoul, Myeongdong is renowned for its shopping, offering trendy beauty products, fashion, and delicious food. At its center lies the Korean Catholic Church, “Myeongdong Cathedral.” Catholicism was introduced to Korea 200 years ago by Confucian scholars as a Western study, eventually becoming a religion that faced government repression. Consequently, many Catholics were executed and martyred throughout Korean history, with 103 canonized and 124 beatified. The first Korean Catholic community began at the site of Myeongdong Cathedral, which was constructed in 1898 as the first Gothic-style brick church. Beneath the church is a crypt housing the remains of seven saints: Bishop Imbert, Fr. Chastan, Fr. Maubant, Antonio Kim Sung-woo, Francisco Choi Gyeong-whan, and two unknown martyrs, all executed at Saenamteo in 1839. The sacrifices of these saints have nourished and strengthened the Korean Catholic Church.
