- Isartor - At the meeting point, gain some background knowledge about Munich, which will serve as the foundation for the tour. Discover how a fire in 1328 had repercussions during World War II. The tour covers aspects of the Allied bombing campaign and how the city was captured by the US Army in 1945. Adjacent to the gate is the building recognized as the birthplace of what became the SS.
- Haxnbauer - This charming restaurant and bar, formerly known as “Sterneckerbrau,” was a gathering place for disillusioned extremists, World War I veterans, anti-Semites, nationalists, and self-proclaimed poets and philosophers. They met to express their dissatisfaction with the Weimar Republic, eventually forming the “Deutsche Arbeiterpartei” or “German Workers Party,” which later became the Nazi Party. The tour covers the Treaty of Versailles, inflation, unemployment, and Hitler’s initial interactions with this group.
- Old Town Hall - The medieval “Old” town hall is relatively new, having sustained significant damage during World War II from Allied bombing. It was here on November 9th, 1938, that the orders for “Kristallnacht” (also known as “The Night of Broken Glass”) were issued. This site is significant as a precursor to the Holocaust that followed a few years later.
- New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) - The New Town Hall dominates Marienplatz, the main square. The tour compares original wartime images with the structures seen today and discusses Germany’s current attitudes towards its past.
- Alter Hof - The Old Court of Munich was once the castle home of the Bavarian royal family, the Wittelsbachs. This picturesque courtyard was bombed during World War II and has been extensively restored. It has been a haven for artists, including failed ones. The tour discusses Hitler’s early life, his military service, and how art was used and misused for propaganda purposes.
- Frauenkirche - At the cathedral, the tour considers aspects of the Allied bombing campaign and the death of Ernst Röhm during the “Night of the Long Knives.”
- Feldherrnhalle - At this location, next to the renowned Residenz Palace, Hitler’s attempted 1923 “Beer Hall Putsch” ended in a hail of bullets. The tour examines the motivations, personalities involved, the court case, and how the Nazis constructed legends and myths to promote their ideologies.
- Staatliches Hofbräuhaus - The tour concludes at this iconic beer hall, the birthplace of the Nazi Party in 1920. (During Oktoberfest, entry cannot be guaranteed without a long wait in line.)
