• Prien am Chiemsee - Before exploring the largest, most opulent castle of Bavaria’s “fairytale king” Ludwig II., enjoy a 15-minute fun boat ride across Bavaria’s largest lake * Prices (2025) for ferryboat round-trip: Adults €13.00 / Children 6-15 years €6.50 * In Prien, a charming town with 10,000 residents on the western shore of Lake Chiemsee, you’ll find not only the lake’s largest harbor but also the boat used by the king to reach the island. During summer, the world’s oldest steam tram operates between the train station and the port!
• Schloss Herrenchiemsee - Herrenchiemsee Palace is an almost exact replica of Versailles, the residence of French king Louis XIV, whom Ludwig greatly admired. During the 35-minute guided tour of the lavish interiors, it’s hard to imagine that the king stayed here for only 10 days—and completely alone! * Prices (2025) Herrenchiemsee palace: Adults €11.00 / Children under 18 years are free * It takes 20 minutes to walk from the pier to the palace, or you can opt for a horse-drawn carriage ride. Your ticket also includes entry to the fascinating Ludwig II Museum and the “Old Palace,” where you can marvel at the magnificent baroque rooms of the former monastery. Don’t miss the kitchen, where meals were prepared for the king.
• Bad Toelz - After less than an hour’s drive, we’ll arrive at the charming spa town of Bad Tölz, located on the Isar River. Once a supplier of lumber and beer to Munich, look forward to a further 45-minute journey in our luxurious minivan until we reach the secluded Graswangtal valley, nestled in the Bavarian Alps, where Ludwig’s second fairytale castle is hidden!
• Schloss Linderhof - 45 minutes later, we arrive at Linderhof Palace, King Ludwig’s smallest yet most intimate castle, situated in a secluded Alpine valley with breathtaking French baroque design and renowned Bavarian trick paintings. (Skip-the-line entrance fee 2025: €10.00 per adult, Children under 18 years are free!)

Within the castle park, other attractions await, such as the Venus Grotto, reopening in April 2025 after extensive renovations (€3.00 per adult extra, cash only; the Venus Grotto is accessible via a steep 0.3-mile path and is closed in winter)

• Oberammergau - Shortly after visiting Linderhof, we reach Oberammergau, where your guide can provide a 15-minute tour, highlighting the famous wall paintings and the Passion Play Theatre. Small shops offer local souvenirs, with wood carvings being a regional specialty.
• Ettal Abbey - The church of Ettal Monastery, consecrated in 1370, is a 12-wall domed medieval hall. The late Baroque interior is sure to leave a lasting impression!

• In Linderhof palace you have to walk only approx. two times 10 minutes (relatively flat) and in the 30 minutes tour of the castle you have to climb stairs to the first floor.
• Herrenchiemsee palace can be reached by a 20 minutes walk or by is a horse-driven carriage, starting at the pier (3.50 € per adult, not operating in winter season) In the palace you have to climb stairs up to the 1st floor and back (there is an elevator service for people with mobility impairments).
• Each castle can be reached also with strollers, but they are not allowed during the tour of the interiors.
