Berchtesgaden is a charming mountain village with a long history that extends back to prehistoric times. Its name is derived from a pagan Goddess and it has been a significant location throughout various historical periods from the Celts to the Nazis. As a settlement, it was established in 1102 AD. The village owes its prosperity to the local salt mines which brought wealth to the area and it changed ownership from nobility to the clergy until it became a part of Bavaria in 1810. Perched on the slopes of the renowned Watzmann mountain, famously featured in ‘The Sound of Music’, it’s no surprise that Bavarian royalty too selected it as a favored residence. Adolf Hitler also took a liking to the area, erecting his mountain home at Obersalzberg, transforming Berchtesgaden into a Nazi fortress during World War II.
