- Wat Rong Khun - Wat Rong Khun is a must-see attraction in Chiang Rai, established in 1997 by Thailand’s renowned artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat. This distinctive temple is notable for its white color and the incorporation of glass pieces in the plaster, which glisten in the sunlight. The white color represents the purity of Buddha, and the temple’s architecture blends modern Thai and Lanna Thai designs, symbolizing Buddhist heaven.
- Golden Triangle - The Golden Triangle marks the convergence of three countries: Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, all meeting at one point. It is located 9 kilometers north of Chiang Saen along the Mekong riverside road. Sop Ruak is where the Mekong River, the border between Thailand and Laos, meets the Ruak River, the border between Thailand and Myanmar. Historically, the Golden Triangle was a major hub for drug trafficking due to its strategic location. However, it is now well-maintained and has become a popular tourist destination. From the viewpoint, visitors can see the land connecting the three countries, surrounded by the serene Mae Kong River.
- Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple) - The construction of this temple was initiated by the local community in 1996 to replace an old abandoned temple that once stood on the site, although construction did not begin until 2005. Its final design was crafted by a local artist named Sala Nok. Wat Rong Suea Ten translates to “House of the Dancing Tiger,” named after the tigers that once roamed the area. The Buddha image in the chapel is over six meters tall and dates back to 2008. It is called Buddha Rajamongkol Bodhi Trilokanat.
-
Wat Huay Pla Kang - Founded in 2005, Wat Huay Pla Kang was designed by a visionary, which accounts for its distinctive style, known for its unique architecture combining Chinese and Lanna styles. The temple offers three main attractions:
- The Guanyin statue, often mistakenly referred to as the Big Lady Buddha, represents the Buddhist ‘Goddess of Mercy,’ an important deity in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the statue, on the 25th-26th floor, and enjoy a view of Chiang Rai from the head of the Guanyin statue.
- Mae Khachan Hot Spring - Located halfway between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Mae Khachan Hot Spring is surrounded by mountains and is considered one of the best hot springs in the north. It offers not only a stunning natural landscape but also many attractions that draw both Thai and international visitors. There is soothing mineral water for foot soaking in its garden for relaxation, and travelers can also purchase chicken eggs to boil in the natural hot water and enjoy a delightful coffee from the highlands of Chiang Rai.
