• Giant Pohutukawa Tree - This ancient tree, estimated to be around 600 years old, is the last remaining pre-European Pōhutukawa on the Mt Maunganui ‘sand bar’ and holds significance for the local Ngäi Te Rangi Iwi. Historical reports mention that early settlers found several pre-European skeletons at the tree’s base in a ceremonial kneeling position. Māori leader Kihi Ngatai (Ngai Te Rangi) noted in the Bay of Plenty Times that during Cyclone Bola, several branches broke off, and local Māori did not permit the council to cut the tree, as the deceased were once hung from the branches until they decomposed, with their bones then buried beneath it.
