Experience a Polynesian compass (Te Kāpehu) similar to the one he used for navigation, which served as the navigational blueprint for our ancestors’ arrival in Aotearoa (New Zealand).
• Otamataha Pa - A short 10-minute drive will transport you back to 1828, a time of inter-tribal conflict, the arrival of settlers, missionaries, and British colonial forces. Here, you will learn about the local Māori tribes.
• The Elms - Visit the Mission House, significant for the conflicts that followed. Also located here is New Zealand’s oldest free-standing library. We will pause briefly.
• Patrick’s Pies Goldstar Bakery Tauranga - Experience a New Zealand culinary icon, the humble pie. Patrick’s Pies Gold Star Bakery is a nine-time New Zealand Pies Supreme Award-winning bakery. It’s a must-try.
• Gate Pa Memorial Reserve - Walk through the site of one of the most significant conflicts between colonial troops and local Māori tribes in 1864. Learn about the carvings, the conflict, and its impact on Tauranga and the surrounding district. Discover how this conflict connected to future world conflicts.
