Olpopongi Maasai Village to Ngabobo Maasai Village - 29km
Kilimanjaro National Park - The day begins with an early morning cycle heading south towards Ngabobo Village. An early start ensures covering a good distance before the sun rises. The route is fascinating, traversing dry and arid open grasslands, contrasting with the lush, green slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro left behind. Wildlife such as wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, and elephants may be spotted in the morning. Although today’s route is shorter, it presents more challenges due to the terrain and weather. The final stretch involves a gradual ascent on a gravel road through Ngabobo Village towards the lodge. The night will be spent at Osiligilai Maasai Lodge.
Ngabobo Maasai Village to Arusha National Park - 31km
Arusha National Park - Today’s journey leads to a new vegetation zone, transitioning from the arid area to the greener slopes of Mt. Meru. The path involves a gentle ascent on gravel roads towards Momella near Arusha National Park. Cyclists will pass through streams flowing down Mt. Meru’s slopes, heading towards the vibrant village of NgareNanyuki, and then towards Arusha National Park. As the park approaches, there may be opportunities to see giraffes along the way. Encompassing both Maasai community territories and Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), the West Kilimanjaro plains in northern Tanzania offer an extraordinary mix of flora and fauna amid stunning vistas of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The region, with its vast expanses of acacia woods and fertile plains, hosts an impressive selection of wildlife. Common species found here include wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, impalas, giraffes and baboons. Depending on the season, elephants might also be sighted as the plains serve as a passageway between Kenya’s Amboseli’s National Park & Mt. Kilimanjaro. The region is inhabited by the migratory Maasai herdsmen who harmoniously share these lands with the native wildlife, hence the nomenclature ‘Maasai Land’. With their abundant cultural heritage and an array of wildlife, a biking trip across these plains will appeal to those thoughtful tourists seeking a unique, far-from-the-crowd adventure that encompasses nature walks, photography, cultural immersion, and scenery.
