Kilimanjaro Climbing begins at Rongai Gate (1,950 m) – 1st Caves Camp (2,600 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - The journey on the Kilimanjaro Rongai Route starts at Marangu’s Park Gate, followed by transportation to the Rongai trailhead (1,950m). The drive to Rongai Gate typically takes about 3 hours. If the weather is favorable, a packed lunch can be enjoyed at Nelemoru. This adventure leads through cypress plantations and mountain forests, where giant monkeys may be spotted. The path concludes at the first Cave Camp (2,600 m), allowing for a gradual appreciation of the surroundings. Porters and cooks, who move swiftly, will have set up camp upon arrival, possibly with popcorn and a hot beverage ready. At the camp, hot water is available for washing, and warm clothes can be changed into. Enjoy the camp atmosphere while awaiting dinner. Be prepared for nighttime temperatures that can drop to freezing.
Kilimanjaro Climbing from 1st Caves Camp (2,600 m) to Kikelelwa Cave (3,600 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - From the 1st Cave Camp, the day begins with a light breakfast, followed by a trek through moorland vegetation wrapped in heather. This trail leads to the second Cave Camp (3,450m) for lunch. After a rest, the journey continues to the 3rd cave campsite (3,600m), also known as Kikelelwa Cave. The 6-day trip is ideal for ample acclimatization time. Upon reaching Kikelelwa Cave, the porter will have prepared the tent, hot water for washing, coffee/tea, and snacks, similar to the previous day. The camp is nestled among small caves in a valley below the saddle. After dinner, prepare for a chilly night.
Kilimanjaro Climbing from Kikelelwa Cave (3,600 m) – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Begin day 3 at Kikelelwa Cave with a light breakfast. The hike starts with an easy incline, transitioning to a steeper path, leading to Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330m. This unique campsite is situated in a depression below Mawenzi’s peak, near a small lake. Upon arrival, the routine is the same as previous days, with a hot lunch followed by relaxation. Use the afternoon to rest and explore the surrounding scenery. Walk to some ridges and towers for stunning views of Kibo. This location is perfect for acclimatization and offers breathtaking views of Mawenzi. Enjoy a beautiful sunset, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.
Kilimanjaro Climbing from Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) to Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After a light breakfast, the day’s hike begins with a small ridge ascent, followed by an easy trail on the northern saddle. With good weather, the views are spectacular. The vegetation today is an alpine desert with sparse grass and occasional everlasting flowers. At this point, the Rongai Route joins the Marangu Route at the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The final stretch to Kibo Hut is steeper. Arrive at Kibo Hut at 4,700m by lunchtime. Hot water for washing and other preparations will be made, ensuring full rest and acclimatization for the final part of the 6-day Rongai trekking route.
Kilimanjaro Climbing - Summit Attempt (Kibo Hut (4,700 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m))
Mount Kilimanjaro - On summit day via the Rongai Route, wake-up time is around 11 PM to 11:30 PM. Reaching the summit from Gillman’s Point takes about 1.5 hours. The remainder of the hike, often snow-covered, follows the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. On the way, pass Stella Point at 5,752m, where another route meets the rim. Nearing the summit can be challenging. Congratulations on reaching Africa’s highest point via the demanding 6-day Rongai Route. At Uhuru Peak, time is limited due to the altitude, so take photos quickly before descending. Return to Kibo Hut for lunch, then continue to Horombo Hut at 3,720m, a 3-hour trek.
Kilimanjaro Climbing from Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Marangu Gate (1,980 m) - Moshi
Mount Kilimanjaro - After a hearty breakfast at Horombo Hut, the final day on Kilimanjaro begins. Descend past the Mandara Hut at 2,700m to Marangu Gate, with a brief lunch break before reaching the gate at 1,980m. At Marangu Gate, register details and receive a summit certificate: a green certificate for reaching Gillman’s Point and a gold certificate for Uhuru Peak. Celebrations, songs, and farewells with the crew may occur at Horombo Hut in the morning or after receiving the certificate. Upon reaching the gate, the driver will be ready to transport you to your hotel in Moshi, where a long hot shower awaits before dinner and overnight stay.
