Conquering Kilimanjaro: A Journey on the Machame Route
Drawn by the allure of Kilimanjaro, I embarked on the Machame Route, a journey promising breathtaking vistas and a deep connection with nature. Join me as I recount this thrilling adventure.
The Call of Kilimanjaro
As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, my heart has always been drawn to the wild, untamed beauty of Africa. This year, I decided to answer the call of Kilimanjaro, embarking on the renowned Machame Route, affectionately known as the “Whiskey” trail. The allure of this adventure was irresistible, promising not only breathtaking vistas but also a chance to immerse myself in the rich tapestry of life that thrives on the mountain’s slopes.
The journey began in Moshi, a vibrant town nestled at the foot of the mountain. From there, we drove to the Machame Gate, the starting point of our trek. The anticipation was palpable as we passed through the village of Machame, with its lush greenery and the distant silhouette of Kilimanjaro looming large. Our guide, Patrick, along with his assistant Michael, and the ever-smiling cook, Jeremiah, were our companions on this journey. Their expertise and camaraderie set the tone for the adventure that lay ahead.
The Rhythm of the Mountain
“Polé polé,” Patrick would often remind us, urging us to take it slow and steady. This Swahili phrase, meaning “slowly, slowly,” became our mantra as we ascended through the montane forest. The trail was a winding path, often muddy and slippery, but the beauty of the forest, with its towering trees and the symphony of bird calls, was a constant reward.
Each day brought new challenges and new wonders. The porters, with their incredible strength and resilience, dismantled and set up our camp at each stop, ensuring we had a warm meal and a place to rest. The food was a delightful surprise—hearty breakfasts of millet porridge and omelets, lunches and dinners featuring soups, rice, pasta, and fresh fruits. Jeremiah’s culinary skills were nothing short of miraculous, providing us with the energy needed for the climb.
The altitude was a formidable adversary, but with the guidance of Patrick and Michael, we acclimatized well. The option to take Diamox was available, but the “polé polé” pace proved effective for most of us. As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed, offering sweeping views of the valleys below and the snow-capped peak above.
The Summit and Beyond
Reaching the summit was a moment of pure exhilaration. Standing atop Africa’s highest peak, with the world spread out below, was a humbling experience. The air was thin, the wind biting, but the sense of achievement was overwhelming. It was a reminder of the power and majesty of nature, and the importance of preserving these wild places for future generations.
The descent via the Mweka trail was a journey of reflection. As we made our way down, I couldn’t help but think of the delicate balance of life on the mountain. The flora and fauna, the communities that call its slopes home, and the travelers like us who come seeking adventure and enlightenment.
This trek was more than just a physical challenge; it was a journey of the soul. It reinforced my commitment to sustainable travel and conservation, ensuring that the beauty of Kilimanjaro remains unspoiled for years to come.
