Umbwe Gate - Umbwe Cave Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - Depart from the hotel and drive to Umbwe gate. After completing gate registration, begin the trek through the rainforest to Umbwe Cave Campsite, where tents will be pre-set. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay. Today’s journey includes traversing ridges and valleys within a dense forest.
Umbwe Cave Campsite to Barranco Hut Campsite.
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, continue trekking through the remaining forest into the moorland and heath zone, enjoying stunning views of Barranco valleys and the mountain’s ice cap. Arrive at Barranco Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Barranco Campsite to Karanga Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - Enjoy a short walk today, beginning the climb of Barranco Wall in the late morning, reaching 4200m for acclimatization. Continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga Campsite for a hot lunch. After lunch, take a short rest and acclimatize further by trekking up the scree slopes towards the Southern ice field, then return to camp for dinner and overnight.
Karanga Campsite to Barafu Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today’s trek to Barafu Ridge Campsite is challenging due to the altitude. Although the walking hours are few, the steepness requires a slow pace to prevent fatigue and altitude sickness. Traverse the alpine desert with strong cold winds, as there are no trees, and approach the Kibo glaciers. Enjoy lunch and an early dinner, then rest until midnight for the summit climb.
Barafu Hut Campsite to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Hut Campsite
Mount Kilimanjaro - The day begins around midnight with a light breakfast, followed by final preparations for the summit ascent. Aim to reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Depart for the peak at 12:00 am, switchback up steep scree or snow, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim at 5,861m between 4 and 5 am. Enjoy views of the crater and icecaps. After an hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim, reach Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak, for photos. Descend back to Barafu Huts Campsite for lunch, rest, and equipment collection, then continue through moorland and heath zone to Mweka Huts Campsite for dinner and overnight.
Mweka Hut Campsite to Mweka Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - On the final day, descend to Mweka Park Gate through Montane forest, taking 3-6 hours. Sign out at the gate and prepare for the transfer back to Keys Hotel in Moshi for certificate presentation and a well-deserved celebration.

The Umbwe route, though less frequented, is a trail that merits consideration. Historically, it was viewed as challenging, but despite its steeper incline during the initial two days, it remains accessible to many hikers. Starting from the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, it merges with the Lemosho and Machame routes by the third day, just before reaching the Barranco Wall. A notable feature of the Umbwe route is the minimal presence of other trekkers during the first two days.
In summary, this route offers breathtaking scenery, providing some of the most stunning views on Kilimanjaro. It allows hikers to experience all of the mountain’s climatic zones and encounter its distinctive flora and fauna.
