Lake Chala - In the 1930s, crocodiles were introduced to Lake Chala. Legend has it that E.S. Grogan, a British explorer known for his 1898 journey from Cape Town to Cairo, was responsible for their introduction. The environment is not conducive for crocodile breeding due to the absence of beaches or sandy areas for nesting. In the early 1990s, fishermen, frustrated by the damage to their nets, initiated a program to remove the crocodiles. Today, Lake Chala is free of crocodiles and safe for swimming, though caution is always advised in Africa.
Lake Chala - Same
Mkomazi National Park - After breakfast, the journey begins by heading south towards the Pare Mountains along a gently winding dirt road. Following a lunch break, the route continues on a dirt road to the Trans-boundary Lake Jipe, then ascends the hills to the Pare Mountains, offering stunning views of the small towns and villages below. The descent to the lodge involves navigating sharp corners on dirt roads. This day serves as a preparation for the more challenging ride the following day. The motel in Same boasts breathtaking views of the South Pare Mountains and serves as an ideal gateway to Mkomazi National Park, the South Pare Mountains, and Shengena Forest.
Same - Lushoto Highlands
Lushoto Highlands - Maasai Steppe/Simanjiro
Lake Manyara National Park - This is a remarkable chance to explore the Tarangire and Manyara ecosystem. Maramboi Tented Camp provides permanent facilities and offers endless views of golden grasslands and palm-lined desert between Tarangire and Manyara Lake. Visiting this area is essential for those interested in human evolution and the origins of mankind, as well as understanding the Rift Valley and Africa’s broader context. It is a semi-desert region.
Maasai Steppe - Tarangire, Manyara Eco-system.
Tarangire National Park - Covering 275 km of loose gravel and the last 50 km on tarmac (8 hours), the journey begins after breakfast on a dirt road through a semi-arid savannah where wildlife and Maasai communities coexist. This Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem serves as a migratory corridor for Tarangire wildlife. After a lunch break, the ride continues on a dirt road for about an hour before reaching a relaxing tarmac road leading to the reserved accommodation for dinner and overnight stay.
Tarangire - Lake Natron
Lake Natron - The route includes tarmac, hilly trails, loose gravel, and sand (140km - 6 hours). After breakfast, the ride departs from the camp, heading along the rift valley escarpment towards the Hadza community. The road is rocky and hilly, passing through varying altitudes and vegetation down to Magara village, adjacent to Lake Manyara National Park. A packed lunch break is followed by a journey to Lake Eyasi to meet the Hadza community, known for hunting and gathering in East and Southern Africa. After hunting with them, the ride continues to the camp where refreshments and food await.
Lake Natron - Arusha
Lake Natron - The ride can take a challenging route through Monduli or an easier path. The journey traverses rolling landscapes with scrub and scattered thorn trees, where colorful Maasai herd their cattle and goats. Antelope and zebra may be spotted, and possibly a predator if fortunate. The ride involves loose gravel and some sand, leading to a well-maintained dirt road to Longido village, where tarmac is met. The ride continues on tarmac to Arusha, potentially exploring a few trails depending on time.
