Arrival
Moshi - Upon reaching Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), travelers will be warmly welcomed by their dedicated Legend Expeditions guide, who will personally accompany them to a luxurious hotel. This hotel is designed for comfort and relaxation, offering plush accommodations with cozy rooms, hot water, attentive and courteous staff, a swimming pool, and reliable Internet access. Once settled in, guests can join fellow climbers for a team meal, fostering camaraderie before the adventure begins. In the evening, the guide will conduct a comprehensive briefing to ensure everyone is fully prepared for the journey ahead. For those interested, there is also an optional short tour into Moshi town to explore its vibrant local charm.
Big Tree Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Guests will be picked up from the hotel at 8am and transferred to the Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After completing the registration process, the climb will begin steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades to reach Big Tree camp, where the night will be spent. During the short trek, it’s important to keep an eye out for Blue and Colobus Monkeys.
Shira Camp 1
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today, a significant distance will be covered as the trek continues across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. A reasonable amount of altitude is gained while heading towards Shira 1, with parts of the route being fairly steep. The steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau aids in acclimatization while offering great panoramic views. As camp is approached, climbers will suddenly get their first close-up view of Kilimanjaro.
Shira Camp 2
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today, there is an opportunity to view the northern ice fields from the western side of the mountain and cross the vast plateau that was once a volcano even larger than Kilimanjaro. The destination today is Shira 2 Camp, with a small diversion to scale Shira Cathedral, providing a chance for extra acclimatization and reaching another summit. The journey then continues to Shira 2 Camp for lunch and a restful night.
Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today’s trek heads straight uphill towards the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. The huge pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640m) is reached, serving as the high point for the day and a great place to enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, a steep descent is made to the camp for the night, located at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960m), sheltered by towering cliffs but offering extensive views of the plains below. By climbing high and sleeping low, the body is helped to acclimatize as effectively as possible.
Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The day begins by ascending the Barranco wall, traversing along a huge rock face. This is the most technical part of the expedition, requiring the use of hands and feet to climb over the wall. The Legend team will be on hand to guide everyone safely through. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the journey heads towards the Karanga valley. From here, a final uphill trek leads to the favorite camp with panoramic views, Karanga camp, set at 3963m.
Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - After a good night’s rest and breakfast, the walk to Barafu camp at 4640m begins. The climb takes place across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around. It’s a tough, steep walk made more challenging by the altitude. Upon arriving at camp, a meal is enjoyed, and the afternoon is spent resting in preparation for a long night and day ahead. It’s important to stay hydrated and warm. An early dinner is followed by an attempt to get some sleep, as the climb to the summit will start between 11pm and 12pm.
The Summit
Kilimanjaro National Park - The climb begins around midnight, with a steep ascent to the summit glaciers. Climbers will be on scree for 4 to 5 hours, gaining incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. The aim is to reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun appear. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround the climbers, and the views to the jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walk leads to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). Success is achieved! After celebrating and soaking up this epic milestone, the descent begins by returning to Stella Point, then descending on scree slope and tracking back to Barafu Camp for breakfast. Finally, the journey continues down to Millennium Camp for a long, well-earned rest.
Mweka Gate
Kilimanjaro National Park - A gentle trek leads down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where park formalities are completed and a final team meal with the local team is enjoyed! Vehicles then meet the group to return to the hotel in Moshi, where a welcome shower (and a cold beer or two!) awaits before the big celebration.
Depart or Safari
Moshi - The day is left free to relax after the trek, before the flight home. Depending on flight times, guests can either unwind at the hotel or explore Moshi town.
There is also the opportunity to extend the adventure and embark on a safari, designed and led by Legend Expeditions.
