Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, the journey continues as the trail becomes steeper, entering the giant heather moorland zone. After crossing several streams, the path leads over the Shira Ridge and gently descends to Shira 1 camp, situated by a stream on the Shira Plateau.
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Following breakfast, enjoy a gentle hike across the plateau to Shira 2 camp, located on moorland meadows by a stream. Various hikes are available on the Plateau, making it an excellent day for acclimatization.
Shira 2 Camp to Moir Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - This day involves a long trek heading east through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’ and into the high alpine desert zone. The morning is spent trekking up to Lava Tower and the iconic Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4,600 meters, where lunch is served. After lunch, join the Northern Circuit heading down to Moir Camp at 4,200 meters. This day is crucial for experiencing high altitude and then sleeping at a lower altitude, aiding the acclimatization process.
Moir Camp to Buffalo Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today features a moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley. An optional hike to the summit of Little Lent Hill at 4,375 meters is available before returning to the Northern Circuit trail. The route then follows a series of inclines and declines, skirting around the northern slopes of Kibo to Buffalo Camp.
Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave
Mount Kilimanjaro - The day begins with a climb up the Buffalo ridge and descends into Porfu Camp, where lunch is typically served. The route continues east around the northern slopes to the Rongai Third Cave. This trek is shorter than the previous day, and by now, acclimatization to the altitude should be well underway. Arrival at the Third Cave is expected around mid-afternoon.
Third Cave to School Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today involves a steady ascent over the Saddle, situated between Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. Trekkers then proceed southwest to School Hut. Upon arrival, an early dinner is served, and rest is recommended as the summit attempt begins before midnight. Ensure all gear is prepared, including warm clothing, insulated water bottles, snacks, a headlamp, and a camera before sleeping.
School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - At around 11:30, you will be awakened with hot tea and biscuits to begin the steep ascent up Kibo’s slopes under the cover of darkness. The first checkpoint is Hans Meyer Cave, where a short break is taken. The climb becomes steeper approaching Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters), reached approximately 5-6 hours after leaving School Hut.
Pause to enjoy the approaching dawn and the stunning view towards Mawenzi Peak, but remember there are still 2 hours of trekking to reach Uhuru Peak, so gather your energy. The slope flattens as you head west around the crater rim, arriving at the summit at or just after sunrise.
Your time at the summit will be brief, so capture as many photos as possible of the breathtaking views and surrounding glaciers. Retrace your steps back around the crater rim to Stella Point (5,739 meters), then turn south and descend the scree slopes of Kibo to Barafu Camp (4,680 meters).
Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, continue descending to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. At lower elevations, conditions may be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are likely sufficient (keep rain gear and warmer clothing accessible).
A vehicle will be ready at Mweka gate to transport you back to your hotel in Moshi (approximately 60 minutes).
