Lake Chala is a remarkable caldera lake, believed to be the deepest inland water body in Africa. It is nourished by subterranean springs originating from Mt. Kilimanjaro. The lake boasts a rich variety of life, featuring lush lakeside forests, breathtaking volcanic savannahs, intricately carved riverbeds through ancient rock, dense bush, and open ‘mbuga’. Chala is home to an extensive array of incredible trees, grasses, and plants, some of which are exclusive to the region. Depending on the season, there are hundreds of butterfly and bird species, including magnificent birds of prey. The African Fish Eagle, known for its hunting prowess, Verreaux’s Eagle, Augur Buzzards, and many other bird species can be observed around the crater walls.
