Kilimanjaro Marangu Route - On the first day of the Marangu Route, hikers embark on a 5-6 hour journey from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut, traversing through a lush rainforest. After registering at the park gate, the ascent begins, with opportunities to spot wildlife such as colobus and blue monkeys. Some itineraries include a brief detour to the Maundi Crater for scenic views before returning to Mandara Huts for an overnight stay.
Marangu Route
Marangu - On the second day, hikers travel from Mandara Hut (2,740m) to Horombo Hut (3,700m) over a 5-6 hour trek. The hike starts in the remaining rainforest and transitions into the moorland zone, offering vistas of Mawenzi and Kibo. Upon arrival at Horombo, hikers can unwind or take an optional short walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views, as noted by Viva Africa Tours and Twanga Touring.
Marangu Route
Climbing Marangu Route - Day three involves an acclimatization hike from Horombo Hut, either to Mawenzi Hut and back or a similar trek toward Kibo Hut. This helps the body adjust to the altitude, with the afternoon spent relaxing at Horombo Hut before dinner. The itinerary may vary based on the trek’s duration (e.g., 5, 6, or 7 days).
Marangu Route
Marangu - On the fourth day, hikers undertake a 5-7 hour trek from Horombo Hut (3,700m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m), covering approximately 10km. The hike crosses the Saddle, a stark, treeless alpine desert connecting Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, hikers rest and prepare for the summit climb, typically starting around midnight.

Climbing Marangu Route - The fifth day marks the final descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, a journey of about 18 km taking approximately 5 to 7 hours. After a final breakfast and farewell to the crew, hikers descend through the rainforest, pause at Mandara Hut for lunch, and continue to Marangu Gate to receive their summit certificate. A vehicle then transports them back to their hotel in Moshi.
Marangu Route
Climbing Marangu Route - The 6-day Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro offers a gradual ascent and better acclimatization, enhancing the chances of a successful summit. It is considered the easiest path on the mountain due to its gentle slope and direct route. As the oldest and most established route on Kilimanjaro, it is the only one offering dormitory-style sleeping huts, complete with mattresses and pillows.
Approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast, the 6-day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Hiking Tour is less scenic than other routes, as the ascent and descent follow the same path. It is also the most crowded route for this reason. KITANO TOURS AND SAFARIS CO L.T.D® provides Marangu Route climbing options for both five and six-day climbs, with the primary difference being the duration.
