ARRIVAL
Altezza Travel - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), an Altezza Travel representative will greet you and arrange your transfer to the hotel included in your package. The hotel offers all the essentials for a pleasant stay: comfortable rooms, hot water, courteous staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. In the evening, a briefing with our managers will ensure you are prepared to start your climb.
TREKKING FROM MARANGU GATE TO MANDARA HUT
Mount Kilimanjaro - A guide and mountain support team will arrive at the hotel in the morning to meet you and conduct a brief orientation before traveling by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park’s eastern entrance: Marangu Gate (1,860 m). After the quick process of obtaining climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will begin trekking to Mandara Hut (2,700 m). The route passes through the rainforest, where tropical showers are likely, so it is advisable to bring spare clothes and raincoats.
Upon reaching the camp, our mountain support team will handle all necessities, set up the tents, and prepare lunch.
Throughout the Marangu route, you will stay in special huts, offering a great alternative for those who prefer not to sleep in tents.
This is your first day at this altitude, so it is highly recommended to follow these instructions from now on:
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine
• Drink over 4 liters of bottled water daily (in small, frequent amounts)
• Take a Diamox pill to help alleviate altitude sickness symptoms. Most climbers take Diamox in the morning before starting their ascent to reduce discomfort associated with altitude sickness. It is advisable to consult your doctor before the trip in case of potential allergies.
At night, you may experience discomfort due to acclimatization to the high altitude: as your waking breathing pattern decreases, your body receives less oxygen than during the day. Considering the altitude, you may feel unwell and have a headache. Pay attention to your body and inform your guide if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.
Change in Elevation: Marangu Gate (1,860 m) — Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
Hiking distance: 11 km
Hiking time: 5-7 hours
TREKKING FROM MANDARA HUT TO HOROMBO HUT
Mount Kilimanjaro - Early in the morning after breakfast, the group will leave Mandara Hut to embark on a moderate trek to the second high-altitude camp: Horombo Hut (3,720 m). Upon reaching the camp, you will enjoy views of two volcanoes: Kibo and Mawenzi.
A few hours after lunch, you will undertake an acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut with a 200-meter altitude gain, then return to Horombo Hut where dinner will be served.
Note:
The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight altitude gain to expedite the acclimatization process. Taking these hikes seriously is crucial as they enhance your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and protect you from altitude sickness.
Trekking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut:
Change in Elevation: Mandara Hut (2,700 m) — Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Hiking distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 5-6 hours
Acclimatization hike:
Change in Elevation: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) — Destination point en route to Kibo Hut (3,920 m)
Hiking distance: 2.5 km
Hiking time: 1–2 hours
ACCLIMATIZATION DAY AT HOROMBO HUT
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, you will go on an acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut and back. After lunch, you have the opportunity to explore the surrounding area, take photos of Mawenzi Volcano, or rest before the upcoming trek to Kibo Hut.
Acclimatization hike:
Change in Elevation: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) — Destination point en route to Kibo Hut (4,500 m)
Hiking distance: 5-8 km
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
TREKKING FROM HOROMBO HUT TO KIBO HUT
Mount Kilimanjaro - On this day, right after breakfast, the group will trek to Kibo Hut (4,700 m). The trek is not very challenging, but maintaining a suitable pace is important to conserve energy for the ascent to Kilimanjaro’s summit. Upon reaching the camp, lunch will be served, and it is recommended to rest as much as possible, avoid strenuous activities, and drink plenty of water.
Change in Elevation: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) — Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
Hiking distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 4-8 hours
TREKKING TO UHURU PEAK AND DESCENT TO HOROMBO HUT
Mount Kilimanjaro - Departing at night from Kibo Hut (4,700 m), you will begin your trek to Kilimanjaro’s summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). The trek is moderate in terms of physical exertion, but the altitude poses a significant challenge. Each pair of climbers will be accompanied by a guide who will monitor your stamina and mental resolve. After successfully reaching Uhuru Peak, you may descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Then, return to Kibo Camp and, after a two-hour rest, continue descending to Horombo Hut (3,720 m).
Note:
Remember that 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including all broken arms and legs. Please be mindful of your footing, as there is a high risk of injuring your toenails.
Change in Elevation: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) — Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

DESCENT FROM HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE
Mount Kilimanjaro - A warm breakfast will be served in the morning, after which the group will head to Kilimanjaro National Park’s exit: Marangu Gate (1,860 m). After the descent, the entire group will gather to celebrate your achievement, and you will have the opportunity to share your thoughts on the trip in the guestbook. Finally, you will receive your commemorative certificates (at our office) and be transferred back to the hotel.
