Moshi to Machame Gate
Machame - Depart from your hotel in Moshi and travel to Machame Gate. After completing the necessary registration, begin your trek through the forest to Machame Hut. This stage involves gentle climbing. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the campsite in Machame Hut.
Machame Hut to Shira Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - From Machame Hut, ascend to Shira Hut at 3,800m. Start early in the morning, crossing the valley and climbing a steep ridge before heading west into the river gorge. The climb becomes more gentle as you reach Shira Plateau and arrive at Shira Hut for camping.
Shira to Barranco 3,950m
Mount Kilimanjaro - This section offers excellent opportunities for sightseeing, particularly of the vegetation and Barranco Valley. Begin the climb by walking east to the junction, then turn south towards the glacier stream, reaching the hut. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the hut.
Barranco to Barafu 4,600m
Barafu Camp - Trek along the ridge to Karanga, taking in views of the West Breach and the Southern Glacier, before following the Barafu Path to reach Barafu Hut for camping.
Barafu to Uhuru Peak
Uhuru Peak - On the final day, start the ascent to the summit very early, around midnight, passing the Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,896m above sea level. After enjoying the sunrise and capturing memorable photos, begin the descent to Mweka Hut for an overnight stay.
Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate
Mweka - After breakfast, descend from Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate, then drive to your local accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Machame Route is the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. All your equipment and supplies are portered and a cook prepares all your meals. Where accommodation on the Marangu route is in huts, the Machame route offers strictly tents only. This makes Machame (also referred to as the “Whiskey route”) better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker, however rewarding him with a scenic splendour such as not seen on the Marangu route. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira, to the misty revelations of Kibo at the great Barranco Wall, the Machame route offers the adventurous hiker a stunning scenic “slide show” over 6 days. The Machame route is normally completed in a minimum of 6 days. There is an added benefit to this, as you are afforded the most valuable commodity on the mountain - acclimatisation.
