- Meknes Medina - Embark on a journey to the historic imperial city of Meknes, often referred to as the “Versailles of Morocco.” Discover historical landmarks such as the impressive ramparts, monumental gates, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. At its height, Meknes boasted over 50 palaces, 20 gates, and a city wall stretching approximately 45km. Known as the holy city of Morocco, Meknes offers a stunning view of the Medina. The tour begins with a visit to the walls featuring monumental gates from the seventeenth century, including Berdaïne Bab and Bab Khemis. Continue exploring the city by visiting the stables (Rua), attics (HERI), and Stud. Stop at the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the only mosque in Morocco that non-Muslims could visit for a long time. Exit through the renowned Bab Mansour El on the expansive Hedim Square. Across the square, the Museum of Moroccan Art “Dar Jamai” showcases a diverse array of handicrafts.
- El Hedim Square - Each summer in Morocco, tens of thousands of devoted individuals make a pilgrimage to Moulay Driss Zerhoun, due to financial constraints preventing travel to Mecca.
In Moulay Driss Zerhoun, Idriss I, the founder of Morocco’s first Islamic dynasty, has been laid to rest for 12 centuries. Near the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, the founder of the Idrissid dynasty sought refuge during his escape from Baghdad in the 8th century. Since his passing, Sufi brotherhoods from across the country gather every summer to participate in festivities and prayers honoring the saint during Moussem. Pilgrims visit this sacred site as an alternative to Mecca, seeking the blessing of the prophet Mohammed’s grandson. It is known as the pilgrimage of the less fortunate.
The faithful approach the tomb, draped in golden silk, placing their hands on it to request Baraka (blessing) and favors from Idris I. At nightfall, disciples from various brotherhoods gather in private homes for mystical-religious nocturnal ceremonies filled with divine songs and invocations. It is also here that King Mohammed VI visited after his enthronement, following in the footsteps of his father, Hassan II.
- La Grande Terrasse - Each summer in Morocco, tens of thousands of devoted individuals make a pilgrimage to Moulay Driss Zerhoun, due to financial constraints preventing travel to Mecca.
- Bab Mansour Gate - Completed in 1732 by Moulay Abdallah, son of Sultan Moulay Ismail, the Bab el-Mansour gate serves as the main entrance to the imperial palace built for Moulay Ismaïl. Designed by a Christian convert to Islam, it is named The Mansour Gate, the renegade. The marble columns adorning the projecting lateral bastions originate from the ruins of Volubilis.
