Sailing Through History: A Family Adventure on Montreal’s St. Lawrence River

Eager to explore Montreal from a new perspective, I embarked on a guided sightseeing cruise along the St. Lawrence River. With my family in tow, we set sail from the Old Port, ready to uncover the city’s rich history and breathtaking views.

Setting Sail on the St. Lawrence

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for activities that can entertain and educate both kids and adults alike. When I heard about the Montreal History Guided Sightseeing Cruise on the St. Lawrence River, I knew it was a must-try for our family. We set off from the Old Port of Montreal, a place that already holds a special charm with its cobblestone streets and historic buildings. The cruise promised a unique perspective of the city, and it did not disappoint.

The moment we boarded the AML Cavalier Maxim, we were greeted by the friendly crew and the inviting aroma of the bistro menu. My kids were thrilled to explore the sunny terraces, and I was equally excited to relax and take in the panoramic views from the glassed-in dining room. As we set sail, the guide began sharing fascinating stories about Montreal’s history, and I was immediately drawn in. His explanations were clear and engaging, making the experience both informative and relaxing. It was a refreshing change from the usual city tours, and I could see my children listening intently, their curiosity piqued.

Discovering Montreal’s Landmarks

The cruise took us along 22 miles of the historic St. Lawrence River, offering breathtaking views of the city skyline. We sailed past iconic landmarks like the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, the Biosphere on Ile Ste-Helene, and the Olympic Park. Each sight came with its own story, and our guide did a fantastic job of bringing these tales to life. I found myself learning new things about Montreal, a city I’ve visited multiple times, and it was a joy to see my kids’ eyes light up with wonder.

One of the highlights was seeing the Boucherville Islands from the river. The lush greenery and serene waters provided a perfect backdrop for family photos. The kids loved spotting the various birds and wildlife, and it was a great opportunity to teach them about the local ecosystem. The cruise also offered a chance to relax and enjoy some light snacks from the onboard bistro. The Captain’s cocktail was a delightful treat for the adults, while the kids enjoyed their sandwiches and juice on the sunny deck.

Tips for a Smooth Sailing Experience

While the cruise itself was a delightful experience, finding the departure point was a bit of a challenge. The directions on the voucher were not as clear as they could have been, and our taxi driver was unfamiliar with King-Edward Pier. Thankfully, we had left the hotel with plenty of time to spare, which allowed us to make a quick call to AML for better directions. For future travelers, I recommend entering through the Science Center roadway, a large building visible from the street, to find the pier at the end of the dock.

Despite this minor hiccup, the cruise was a memorable experience for our family. It offered a perfect blend of relaxation and education, making it an ideal activity for families visiting Montreal. The kids left with a newfound appreciation for the city’s history, and I left with a heart full of cherished memories. If you’re planning a trip to Montreal, I highly recommend adding the Montreal History Guided Sightseeing Cruise to your itinerary. It’s a wonderful way to see the city from a new perspective and create lasting memories with your loved ones.
