This self-guided, self-paced audio walking tour will take participants through Cannery Row in Monterey, California, and its surrounding areas, including various hotels and historic landmarks. Please note that there is a separate admission fee for the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

During this tour, participants will learn about how the area was the industrial hub of Monterey in the early 1900s. The seemingly endless supply of Pacific sardines attracted fishermen, investors, and inventors from across the globe in search of prosperity. However, (spoiler alert!) overfishing led to the industry’s decline by the 1950s.

Participants will also uncover the connection between John Steinbeck and this region, meeting some of the vibrant characters immortalized in his novels “Cannery Row” and its sequel “Sweet Thursday.” Finally, they will hear the remarkable story of how Cannery Row literally rose from the ashes to become a vibrant waterfront featuring world-class hotels, wine rooms, restaurants, and shopping venues.
